  • Weird mk1 found

A friend of mine deals in antiques and came across this car buried in a junk yard. I told my mk1 guy and he went down there and bought it. So firstly the near engine mount is in a completely different place to house the cross flow. It is stamped made in West Germany so I'm thinking it's maybe a private import due to the motor, gearbox linkage, different dash and the hatch is latched. It appears to be a late 76 so post swallow tail.

    Here are some pics

Anyone shed some light on this. Think the UK got 1.1 & 1.3 crossflow?

It's a 1.1 or 1.3 litre. There were a very few of them sold here in the first year or so. This is probably one, judging by the Aussie compliance plate on the radiator support. The side engine mount bracket can be ground off and welded on in a different spot to allow a 1.6 or 1.8 big block engine! Or a polo 1.4 16v or 1.6 AEE would bolt straight in and use that mount and gearbox setup. Or just run it as it is, tough little engine.

Thats a UK import or very early. Same motor as the polo.

Is this the one that was surrounded by all the steel in the scrap yard?

Yeah Woody they couldn't be bothered to dig it out so old mate when down there mob handed!

Matt I thought the chances of it being a personal import and not legit were low. We know the motor is a runner so I told Brian to leave as is although he's got that many 1600 donks lying around if anyone out there needs one or a 4 speed msg me!

The booster is tucked away. The plate on the sill says manufactured in West Germany with 176 hence the year. Picture of dash now corrected!

                Wow, interesting indeed!

Might be worth running the tags through rego etc to find out a bit more about it. Even through VW themselves, and get a birth certificate for it. Definately an interesting one.

Yeah tachos are just for wank.... thats why they put a clock in the diesels - so you could see how late you were running (actually I used to use it to time my journeys!)

nice, shame about the hole in the dash looks to have the full plastic model. The 1.3s are a good little engine if running. we converted calebs over here a few years ago to a 1.6. his was originally a SA model. take a look at the grill that is sitting on the passenger seat also it will likely be the open early style that lets alot more air through to the radiator. getting hard to find
