  • What a shame! Its always sad to see a mk1 die, especially one in such nice condition.
We all know that you'll bounce back with this new swallowtail though

    • quick little update...

here is the rusted section that was cut out

      and replaced

      engine bay slowly getting there...

      floors cleaned up

how the bay currently looks after having the heater core/fan holes all welded up with steel plate. painted in silver metallic (all i had on hand) hence why it looks a bit funny ahaha

bit more grinding to do and what not, a light skim of bog and a bit of sanding love and this bad boy should be ready for paint!

        • looks the biz! how much do you plan on shaving from the bay? and interior respray aswell or are you not painting it?
But no really, I like to look distinguished when I step out of the car. People are like, "wonder what he does for living."
I just reply, "your daughter, sir." - some dude on stanceworks

I had fixed half the broken crap but that just meant it was still halfway inoperable

thats pretty much it in regards to shaving the bay - the holes that have been shaved are getting a quick once over with some bog to make it all smooth and the likes but thats about it.

entire car will be resprayed including the engine bay, bottom of bonnet, door jambs and the interior (as much as is necessary considering its covered by carpet, headlining etc - but the inside of the doors and boot will be done) as well as (obviously) the exterior..

can't wait to start putting it back together!

I don't want to talk about it ahaha. Josh brought this up the other day as he was doing most of the welding - pretty much I'm confident in being able to retro fit the fan assembly lower so that when the 'demister' is turned on air blows from somewhere, as for the rain tray I'm claiming ignorance and am hoping that once the car is resprayed it'll look pretty close to factory, the bloke that I go to for RWC is pretty clueless when it comes to old cars and highly doubt he'll know what a '76 golf engine bay is meant to look like... So yeah fingers crossed really. My fall back is club rego.

                • I think you'll be right. As long you go about it the right way and by the looks of it you are. I think but don't quote me the rain tray can be removed as long as you plug up all holes that lead to the cabin, to prevent the toxic fumes entering. And yes you need a demister for road worthy. As long as these are sorted you should be right.

                  • Elton, look into 'hotrod' demister systems. they're and electric heater and fan assy, used for cars which shaved firewalls, race cars, etc etc

thanks jarred - came across something like this? Ceramic 12 Volt CAR CAR Heater FAN Demister W Handle HOT ROD Truck Boat VAN | eBay ? not exactly sure how i'd mount it but i'll look into it if necessary. When i originally got the car (the blue one) the heater core had been bypassed so didn't have a heater (obviously) so effectively i didn't have a demister, didnt cause any concerns at all when roadworthied last time.

Roadworthy necessities, laws, rules, guidelines, anything, i've found to be very hard to come by, 90% of the things that get thrown around are hearsay. For example 'a pod filter wont pass rwc and is a defectable offence' my last car passed a rwc with a pod filter, i asked the bloke if it was legal and he said due to the fact it was secured and had a heatshield it was perfectly fine.
The roadworthy handbook i have been able to find online is also very vague and ambiguous and tends to leave a lot of it up to the discretion of the tester.

In saying that, i hope you are right in what you said about plugging up the holes, i did read there needed to be a partition between the cabin and the engine bay to allow fresh air into the cabin - not quite sure if having the window down counts for this ahah! but thanks for the input - will obviously be keeping you posted with how i go.

Picked up paint today, will be undercoated not this weekend (as in tomorrow) but the following, and it'll be going in for top coat/colour the weekend following that.

all in all should (fingers crossed) be on track to make it to VITS

                            • Dude I've looked into the heating and demister for mine for a while. All the electric ones are pretty crappy and will drain your battery, not to mention it may burn the the Hester out if used too much to its max. You also won't have a heater...... Heaters are bad ass, you need a heater haha. My final verdict was to use the original heater core and make a small box for it, with vents directly to the windshield. You could also use copper of PVC pipes to relocated the hot water, going a lot lower in the firewall than the originals... Hence remaining unseen to the eye. Just my 2c
