  • Advice Cabrio Engine Mount??

    hi guys,

looking at a cabrio 91' at the moment, guy says that one of the engine/box mounts is slightly worn, giving a bit of flex...making it hard to put in 1st sometimes
    ??

i think its more likely to be worn gear rod bush

any advice on cost of repair etc etc would be helpful!

    cheers

    Engine Mounts

    Hi,
I would also be checking the Steering Rack Mounts as well which is attached to the Firewall with Two Brackets.
If they are worn they will allow side movement causing the Relay Lever to move as it is attached to the rack.
If they are real bad you can feel it i when you are driving the car as the same movement affects the Steering.
You can check the Steering Rack for movement by having somone move the Steering Wheel to & fro, whilst having a look at the Rack against the Firewall.
They cost around $30.00 & take about 30 minutes to replace.
A bigger problem with the Steering Rack is that the actual Support Brackets break away from the Firewall & allow the same movement.
This is a far bigger Item to repair & to do it correctly, the Firewall mounts need to be fully welded.
The last 91 Cabrio i worked on had the same problem & cost about $300.00 to have it fully welded.

      Cheers for the reply mate.

i don't think it would be quite that bad, car has FVWSH

surely something that structural would have been spotted ??

      What do reckon ?

        Engine Mounts

        Hi,
I would think a Road Worthy would pick up something like a Steering Rack but it all depends on who does it.
The Cabrio i worked on, did have a Road Worthy done.
The owner left the car with me Three days after the RWC was done.
I took the car for a test Drive & found a few things wrong.
The main item was the Steering was very " Unprecise " & the Gear linkage was all over the shop.
The main thing was the Steering rack Brackets were completly torn away from the Fire wall, a major Fail.
It might not be as serious as all this but it is something to be very aware of.
        Cheers

99% of Mk1 shift issues are down to the linkage. Get a linkage rebuild kit and it'll be like a new car
