  • Engine Options Help?

I know this is an Age old Question But ...

Im Just wondering how much work would be needed to swap in one of these

and what sort of parts and things would I need to do so And does anyone know if it would really make much difference?

If not what would be the best type of Conversion to do in a Mk1 Being young and all I'm really keen on getting something boosted but I'm not too sure if its feasible to do so and I'm looking at doing everything at the lowest cost possible?.

    Ahh, the impatience of youth.

By far, the most sensible thing for you to do at this point is read all the mk1 build threads, here and in the restorations, conversions and projects sections, and other other VW forums aswell, and you will both learn and answer all of your above questions and then some.

You will soon find that pretty much any engine you can think of has been swapped into a mk1 over the years, and they re all possible depending on the amount of money, brains and effort you can spare.

ive read through a bunch of the threads on here and many of them require alot more skill and knowledge then what I have so i guess in a way im looking for something that could be simple? from what ive read i know that by far the easiest option would be getting a half cut or a wrecked car with either a 16v or a vr6 but im not too sure what I should be looking for exactly. From what I know a vr6 requires different mounts whereas a 16v wouldnt? and i know that eurowise make a kit for the Vr6 swap Im just unsure if it would be better or easier to do a vr6 swap or a 16v swap ?? bassically they were my two main thoughts on what to get. If i was to decide not to tackle this on my own but take it to someone like camden gti does anyone know roughly how much i should be looking at for such a swap?

Drop the VR6 idea, start with something that has a chance of getting finished. ABF could be a bit much for a first try. You got issues straight off with most conversions because you need injection pressure, which means (usually in the UK anyway) an injection tank. Not available on every street corner in Australia.

A 2litre 8valve would be what i'd go for. Even a 1.8 single point. Once you crack that go bigger.

In the olden days back in the UK, I could do most of a 16V into a MK1 in 2 days. That's with a decent set of tools and a hoist. Modding the wiring takes a bit to get the warning lights etc going.

Mate the easy option is to drop a 1.8l 8v or a 16v with a 5 speed box, it will pretty much have balls for a
            Light car
MK1, 1976 golfLS, 4 door (SOLD! Will be missed)
            MK1, 1980 golfGLD, 4 door (1.8l, 8v, 5 speed)

Interesting insight well in that case I might stick with what I have and just upgrade the carby on It to get abit more go out of it, any sugestions on a carby? , and then ill just rebuild the box anybody know of some places that rebuild gearboxes. Ive curently got a 1.9 8v with an ACD close ratio 5 speed which is pretty rough but still drivable.
