I've got a mk1 golf with mk3 front hub/ brakes on it so do I got the mk1 coilovers or the mk3 because we're the coilovers attach onto the hub is thicker on the mk3 then the mk1

The problem you're going to have is mk3 coilovers aren't going to be spring/dampened rated for a mk1. I am not sure how different the mk3 hub mounting points for the struts are. Are the holes the same distance, just the thickness different? If so I guess you could have your hubs machined down to mk1 thickness, and still retain the benefits of a mk3 hub. Don't mk3 hubs have quite different locations for the tie rod ends as well? I'm curious to see this setup.

do you also have power steering? I was kind of under the impression this mod would create heavy steering because of the short steering arms on the hubs.

Mk2/3 suspension is the same geometry/sizing. I dont think that mk2 damping rates for the front would be too far stiff for a mk1 unless the mk1 had an otherwise standard engine/transmission.

For instance, I have mk2-3 lowering springs in my mk1 cabby using mk1 struts. The springs would make it really really low in a mk2/3 strut but in a 1.9L TD engined cabby, the springs are just right for slightly lowered and sporty handling. unlike most mk1 lowering springs they are nice and pretentioned in the struts

Anyway, abreut has made the valid point and is correct, but I would also make a note that not all coilovers have spring/damping rates that make any sense whatsoever, (like hottunings) but they still work (to some extent).

            This is true.

It would be interesting to know if you're already using a mk 3 strut, or the mk 3 hub was machined down to accept the mk 1 strut. Cause that could mean you can just get mk 1 coils and be done, or that maybe a more custom solution is required!

My brother has the same set up but with machined hubs. I was going to do that just thought I could cheat and go mk3 but oh well, as for the steering the being hard I don't think it's that hard it's got nice feel. That's on Tristan's I mean mines not going yet
