  • This sucks!

    Hey guys,
After 3 months of sitting and waiting for my mk1's engine bay to be painted the desired colour it has officially came back with a horrifying colour, also been stoneguarded! Seriously what was my uncle thinking! It has turned me off working on the car!
I've got a lemon yellow golf and the majority of the engine bay is beige stoneguard with silver sprayed over the top. I've started stripping it BACK to how it was before I handed it to some wreck less spraypainter, the few hours I've spent on it with the available materials I can get my hands on was really fustrating!
    Materials used:
    - scraper
    - razor blade
    - engine degreaser (I had it sitting there so I have it ago to soften the paint/stoneguard)
    - wire brush
Arghhhh it's taking forever! Has anyone got other ways of stripping it down with ease
    Thanks
    Steve

gee that sucks< sorry to hear. I bought a pot sand blaster from super cheap once and sand blasted a engine bay out.
This works the best otherwise your left with using the chemical paint stripper and trusty scraper. good luck!

I might go into supercheap and speak to a mate and see what he has to say and also grab some ideas on the sandblasting option.

why did you stone guarded the engine bay?? Sand blasting is not a good option i think , it is so difficult to remove the stone guard by sand blasting , the paint is elastic so it takes too much time. i removed the underside stone guard by a heat gun and vire brush . once the surface is heated enough the stone guard material just leaves the surface, which you can just remove with wire brush. then i used the purple disk on an air grinder to remove the residue, for an mk1 engine bay this is at least 3 days work i must say.

I didn't choose to stone guard the engine bay! My uncle is a spraypainer Supposedly and he decided to paint the bay and turned out pretty sheit house!
I've used a product called paint strippa from bunnings wearhouse, so far it's been pretty easy to peel off!
I've applied the resent with a paint brush and left it in there for 15-20 mins and then used a scraper to scrape off as much as I can then done a quick round with a wire brush. I've been doing sections at a time.

best trick with paint stripper i've found:

scratch a few marks with sharp tool / razor blade
            apply paint stripper
cover with glad wrap / plastic sheeting.

            wait 15 20 mins.

watch it wrinkle off and scrape off with ease

Yep fegot to mention scoring the painted surface with a razor. It works pretty smooth! I havnt applied gladwrap might take that in consideration and begone using gladwrap on the other side of the engine bay! Been taking longer then I should due to working 13 hour shifts!!! Arghhhh su**s
