MK1 US Rabbit (golf) info/help

OK, I am in need of some info before I get to much deeper into the project.

Here goes, it is an 82 US built 3D rabbit, heres what is going on;

Best way to remove rear side windows and save the glass, for paint prep. And what sort of seals should I get (making my own pop out windows, using hardware from a VW Fox 2D)

I am doing a 1.8 rocco transplant engine and tranny, unless someone recomends running a 4k tranny out of an 83 Gti. What drive axels should I use so I don't get any binding on bearings etc? The Rocco tranny has been rebuilt and has 100mm cups (the 4k has 90mm if I need to swap them)

Second I am debating between 14" or 15" wheels but what offsets will work (without stretching tires ie. 185/60 14's or 195/50 15's) on a 6-7" wide rim? the brakes are a swap from a 16V rocco also so I can use 13's.

I may have some more questions as I really get into (once it is warm enough, close or above freezing, I don't have an insulated shed)

iirc, offset between 28 and 38 should be okay for Mk1 rabbit.

If you have 100mm flange you just need a set of 100mm axles. To make it easy at the parts store just ask for axles for a 1988 Scirocco 1.8L DOHC model.

Well not really: you only need the larger inner CVs - in fact, you don't even need them if you're willing to swap the ouput flanges on the gearbox, which is pretty easy.

Having said that, with you being in the USA, German Auto Parts stock refurbished Scirocco 16v 100mm axles at a good price.

A safe offset is around +32-40mm with 7" rims, but obviously a lower one will look better and give you a wider track and less body roll.

ET25-30 looks nice, but you'll need to roll the inner guard lips.

14s or 15s work well on the Mk1: a 195/50/15 tyre is too high: you need a 195/45/15 in a 15x7 to get close to the factory diameter.

Best way to remove windows is with some safety glasses, a few flat-head screwdrivers, and at least one friend

The Happich pop-out windows are still around, but command a pretty high price!

I use to drive a beige 82 4D diesel years ago with a Rola roof rack that usually had a ski box on the roof in the winter months. I don't know who's 2D golf it is you have seen in Eldon, I was home last Dec. but did not get to ride the trails out there because of all the smoke.

I am making my own rear pop outs, I snaged the hardware of a 2D Vw Fox, and I have not tried it yet but snaged pop out window seals from a mini van, but I don't know at this point if they are going to work but if they do, my total expense will be less than $30us compared to $1100 that people are asking for the German variety. The Fox Hardware is what was sold in the US for Vanagon owners wanting to convert windows to pop outs in the rear of there vans.

I am looking several wheel options at the moment Ronal Turbos, Ronal LS, minilite copies, BBS RA's (which I have but need work),and G60 sebrings. i am having the car repainted the original Silver and am installing a BBS body kit. I am looking for a rear variance that would work with the BBS kit and a Hatch spoiler (High not low).
