I think you will find it somewhere in between little and whole chop.
Putting the engine in is not the hard part, getting the mk4 ancillaries to work in a mk1 would be the headache.
Yeah Mk3 and Mk4 blocks are the same as Mk1 but the alternator, efi system and all the sensors etc is where the fun comes in.
You can take the basic motor and box and bolt up your Mk1 acessories easily enough, but its a full conversion to change everything else.
If your car is already injected, its a bit easier.

nah screw it i dont even know y i bother asking my engine goes really good anyways, just need a turbo kit for it and it will go harder looking to pump 200+kw
