  • Weird Temp Problem

While im stopped at the traffic lights my temp gauge reads the correct temp but once i take off and i am driving the needle drops off.

Is my gauge rooted or is it something else?

    Scan a Mk1

    I'd say thermostat problem.

Sticky stat Boss! I would replace it mate as it might decide to stay closed an then a world of hurt awaits!!! Not only that if it keeps open the engine never gets to operating temp and can result in washing your bores and diluting your oil mate.
Just a quickie about the scanning thing a few posts back- it some times pays to forget scanners for a wee bit and look at what the engine is actually doing. This is a MK1 and doesnt even have flash code man. People nowadays put too much trust in scanners - YES you do need them and im an advocate for that but ive watched apprentices under me look at a scanner - Engine rough but no faults so there is nothing wrong with vehicle-WRONG yes there is the client isnt dreaming it!!! Turns out a faulty plug or something. What happens when a temp sensor is operating at its max parameter???? Wont bring up a fault but will cause fuelling issues!!!!
Sorry about the rant about a thermostat but some useful info i hope!

Wise words jimmymac, it pays to go back to basics first, especially on an early car.

Change that thermostat Costa, summer is just around the corner.
