Gti hibernation

As you guys might know I have owned my Gti for the last 2 & a half years. More and more little things have been going wrong with the car, and in between the 2 kids, building a house and working all over Aust the mk1 doesn’t get the proper attention and TLC it needs. Lately the reliability has been average; I’ll need to start from the ground up, and to top it off its rego is running out. It’s time for the little bad boy to go into temporary retirement until the house is built and a few things fall in place.

The Gti has also been known to be “so-and-so’s” old car and I’ve owned it now long enough to put my own personal touches into it. Who knows if it ends up Silver?

Don’t want to go into too much detail, but all I can say is... its gonna be skitz!!

There won’t be too much progress now but like the saying goes Rome wasn’t build in a day.

And so I reminisce about the good ‘ol days...

It's such a shame it acted up when you were about to come up for last Monday's track day - it would have been a nice way for it to be put to pasture for a while. But it's great that you're keep it and that it will be reborn better than ever

I agree about buying someone else's car, it is a hard path to walk.

I used all my GTIs regularly, that's the real key to reliability. They don't handle sitting around well at all. Not to say things didn't break but I was doing 20000 miles a year at the time and never had to worry about them starting.

Certainly, storing it inside is going to be much better for it all round though.

Yeah it used to be really reliable. I drove it from NSW to South Australia, and a few times from South Australia to Victoria. But lately the Gti is getting tempremental. I must admit that when ever I take it out I do Flog it.
Another thing is that their is alot of cancer (rust) coming up from under the paint. Might have been a cheap and nasty cover job......
Ive got a 20v Agu motor thats gonna go in with a Gt28rs Garrett. Should be stronger and quicker. Chasing min 200kw on the wheels. If not then ill get a bigger hair dryer.

I'm in the same boat buddy, but must say a Shed is a must! Mine's also parked outside and I can see some small areas of rust on the rear wheel arches coming through. Don't wanna start working on it again till the shed is built and kitted out which should hopefully be within the next month. Get the shed 1st!!

Nah its all good mate. Sometimes you have to take 1 step back to take 2 steps fwd. I am actually very keen and excited to rebuild it my way.
The surge tank is in, and we mounted it in the wheelwell. Lucky13 installed the surge tank.
How is your bad boy going?

UPDATE.....

So far there still hasn't been much happening, but I've recently put the GTI on Vic club plates. Gives me the chance to drive it a bit more.

Went to the drags and ran a new PB 13.5 @ 104.12 mph.

Are you still planning on going the gt28rs route? They also have the newer gtx28's now that flow an extra 50hp, and come on boost even earlier, but are exactly the same external silhouette as the gt28rs.
