Zale's Mk1 GLD - Project Time

Hey guys,

My name is Zale and im 20, im a furniture maker down here in wagga but im really keen on my cars too.
I have a 1994 VR6 that i love and do a fair bit of work on whenever i can but im really looking forward to my new project as i have picked up a mk1 GLD on saturday, its silver and it has a bit of rust going on so i have to treat it and deal with it pretty soon as i want to get it registered at some point in the near future as a daily.

At the moment the state of the car is not great but i havent gotten around to getting it completely cleaned up.

Went up to sydney from wagga on friday night with my VR6 on the car trailer ready for some work and getting a whole bunch of stuff fixed up, left wagga at 7pm and got to sydney about 1am.
Saturday morning started off with an early rise at 6am so we could get up make the 1 hour trip to camden gti and be there by 830 giving us enough time to get breakfast at a bakery (fresh crousants.... The bomb!) get lost and still be on time.
Unloaded the VR and got to check out matts scirocco which is super cool.
After this we headed out to the oaks to pick up the mk1, When we got out there and saw it i was a tad dissapointed about the rust that wasnt mentioned but too excited to care, Loaded the mk1 onto the trailer loaded the parts and then headed back to wagga which was a much nicer and easier trip as the mk1 weighs a whole lot less than the VR.
Got home and unloaded the mk1 drove it round the block and then parked it up in the back yard ready for the start of the project.

Initial plans for this are;

Chop the springs for a month or so because i cant deal with it being so high
Coilovers very soon just doing some research into the best deal with full height adjustable and dampening adjustable
Treat all the rust by cutting it out and replacing it with good solid metal, if its only small i will just spray it with some rust converter as this car is going to be my place of learning for a more serious build that i want to do with a 3dr.
Keep the car pretty ratty
Will be making a big order so i can do a full service and get it running smoothly once again
Have some 15x6.5s that i will put on as soon as its low and i have bought some tyres and 30mm spacers for the rear
Down the track i will most likely respray this myself just for the experience and to do something different but for now it will be treat rust and spray it up with patches everywhere just cause.

So here it is in my back yard...


Big bumpers... gross so got rid of them.


Alot more rust than i thought originally so i will have to fix that.

So, started with stripping the interior and getting rid of all the horrid stinky carpet..



Will be painting the surface rust i cant grind off and that isnt worth replacing with some rust kill/converter then i will bitumen paint the whole interior surface before doing some re wiring and re carpeting.

And the current state of it at the moment and where i will be working on it over the next couple of months to get it on the road! Really enjoying it so far, feels good as to get in and get it done myself.

As i said before the body is going to stay pretty rough for a while cause i like it and im going budget for now as im still learning!

So the last few days it has been raining like crazy here in wagga and everywhere is blocked off sandbagged up or flooded already.. So seeing as though my mk1 has been parked in the carport i thought ohwell better hook into it again. so with the help of Sam Cullen samsc1192 and another mate we ripped the struts out front and back chopped the springs strapped the struts and got the little mk1 to a pretty decent height!

This is how the rear is sitting now which im happy with and will keep it at this height till i get some coilovers in a month or 2






Also got some rust guard in the boot section that i cleaned up


Hopefully work is still flooded tomorrow as the river hasnt peaked yet so i might be getting the day off, in which case ill get crackin on finishing the interior floor with rust guard so that i can then bitumen paint it before i re carpet it.

Will also be looking at re-wiring the majority of the car along with shrink wrapping everything in the process.

I used bitumen in my interior and i regret it bro. It takes too long to dry, is waaaaaaay too messy and also leaves a horrid smell in the car that is impossible to get rid of. Also when it gets really hot in the car in summer, it sort of melts and it slips sometimes. I dont reccomend it

Ah right, thanks for sharing! i was mainly planning on doing it for a bit of a sound deadener. might just leave it for the wheel arches and underside of the car!

It is **** stuff, the main thing being is if you are ever working on the car with greasy hands it breaks the bitumen paint down and goes everywhere. Just paint it with epoxy paint.

haha so funny that im sitting in the lane surrounded by the cats we are making some pretty quick progress on this i need to start hooking into mine now that the rain has stopped

its gunna be a good little car zale has been bolting the wheels and putting seats in ect at 1 in the morning to evacuate it the floods are moving in on his joint fast, spend the last 5 hours moving stuff out and putting other stuff up high..

Thanks mate, we got most of the stuff out and now the water is slowly starting to fall, it hasnt breached the levee bank yet but theres still a possibility it could.

hope it doesnt so i can get home and get everything in the house again haha!
