Flooded KJet ecu... Help

Hi everyone,

So bad news this morning. I woke to seriously heavy rain and went out to the car which wouldn't start. The car was parked on a steep slope to the passenger side and when I popped the bonnet I could see that area next to the ecu had flooded.

This afternoon I've taken it outhit it was half full with water. It's currently drying in front of the fan but i'm worried it might be toast!. Are these units interchangeable and anyone know where to get one without breaking the bank balance?

That looks different to mine. It's just an ignition module. I think $40 from Tooleys if you need it ASAP.

Ops sorry, it's a mk1 cabriolet. A mate of mine told me you can't interchange them though. Is that bs?

Does it have a vacuum line? I have a 16v kjet ECU here. Might work...

No, no vacuum line just the unit, don't think the 16v would work

I'd say they'd be interchangeable, they're pretty simple things.

Did water get into the box itself? Have you opened it?

Two things you can try to get the PCB dried out.

1. Isopropyl alcohol . Chemists should have it. Just tip it all over the circuit board, it'll pull any moisture out.

2. Rice. Dismantle the ECU and find a tupperware box big enough to hold it. Tip a fresh bag of rice into the container and seal the circuit board in there with it for a few days. The rice will absorb the moisture.

Jaycar also sell aerosol cans of PCB cleaner that will help too. Don't use WD40 it leaves a sticky mess.

If neither of those work try Matt at Camden GTI for a replacement ECU or convert the car from KE-Jet to basic K-Jet and you won't need the ECU at all.

There are places that can repair those ECUs but that would be the last and most expensive option.

Thanks Pete, when I pulled it out this afternoon it was full of water. I took the back off and emptied it out. It's been sitting infront of the fan for a while so hopefully tomo it will have dried out. Fingers crossed!

I might sound really stupid here but what the hell; I alway thought mine was a k-jet not a ke-jet? What's the obvious differences?

Kjet isn't pure mechanical and no ecu. Ke jet uses an ecu.

VdubEd, if yours is an australian delivered car then i have the used ECU from my JH ( engine code) KE Jetronic ( 1993 Cabrio) I have converted mine back to basic K jet. PM me if your needing it as its only sitting in a box with the harness.

Mick, that ECU that you have is one version of the 16V knockbox. Also comes with the Dizzy TCI unit and some versions with a seperate control for the Idle stabiliser unit. It only controls the timing for the 16V engine.
