Does anyone know the part number and/or where to get them in Melbourne?

I think it depends on your engine size, GTI or not, whether you have 100mm or 90mm driveshafts etc....

Try ringing a dealer service dept. and asking if you can get them, and see if they will give you the vw part number

      / diesel eng., automatic

fits all mk1. Back in the day there were slightly different ones, now you can just get one type.

I think some bigger ones from later models do fit but thats not the OP question.

Ring HSY autoparts and ask, or tooleys, or even try ebay.

Thanks for that info. HSY told me they no longer stock Mk1 parts. I will try Tooleys and eBay now I have the numbers.

the outers for cabriolet will fit, and surely HSY still stock those since the cabriolets go to 1993!

I only asked about a Mk1, however Brian at GTImports has them and they are on the way. Thanks, I will ask HSY and keep that source in mind.

if you are not in a hurry then i would definately suggest you go to bus depot as you will not get them cheaper anywhere.
