Yeah pete i've seen them. However i naturally assumed that they wear really quickly? But then was quick to realise that the flappy disc actually clog up even quicker haha. Well the rear had alot of surface rust, so i thought the flappy disc was more suitable to remove paint and surface rust in one go. How does the brumby strip disc work with surface rust, any idea?

Goin great guns there matey. I love these threads where novices just get stuck in and arent ashamed to share their possible failures!! I felt the same when doing my mk2 1.8t swap.
I'm about to do the same on my mk1. You can treat the bare metal with phosphate which will neutralise any rust. I think you can buy it from bunnings? Its obviously too late with the floor, even though you should be right, but you could give it a bash in the other areas?
Also check out the product from the UK called Dinitrol.
Do you find the flap disc takes a fair bit of the metal off, or are you using a super fine grit?
Hey mate, sorry i didnt notice this. Haha thanks, i like to learn as i go, i've had people explain something to me a million times, but until i do it myself i'll never understand it haha. I also like the idea of being able to tell the people that i've restored the car myself, rather than a body shop, when people find out i did the orange one myself they are astonished as im young haha.
Anyway to answer your question, i actually find the flap discs really good, i get 120 grit, which is a bit more expensive, but takes off the paint, and only skims the metal so that if there is any rust it only gets to that and nothing else. Dont get me wrong though, if you hold it too long on one spot it would start eating it away. However for stripping paint only i would recomend what Pete said above ^ .
Ok this is the part i need help (wink wink pete jones ) I have a rust issue, however its in a tricky place.
There is a few small holes, but nothing crazy, however the metal is stained deeply with rust. Should i be afraid if deeply stained rust, even if i rust converter it?
This is what im speaking of in particular, so it wont be easy to cut/weld a new body part, nor will it be easy to repair, as i dont want the rust to bite through the paint a year or two down the track PLEASE HELP GURU'S
I can't help you here, but just wondering if you are gonna apply that red suff (rust converter?) also to the outside or just to the inside of your mk1?
George, this looks like its a cut and weld job to do it properly. you will need to cut and make a new panel using a template of the original part before you cut it out, by using template paper, its like gasket making paper. George give me a buzz this weekend and come and have a look at this silver mk1 in my street. before he advertises it. its not too bad for what it is.
Spent some time today to clean all the surface rust around where the rain try was previously. It was soo hard to clean everything while remaining the curve. Thank you flappy disc
Also, what do i do with this deeply stained rust? I couldnt clean it anymore. Treat it, or cut it?
Can you get to it from the cabin, or is it not that bad?
Flattern it off a bit and POR-15 it, otherwise stick with your converter. Wouldn't worry about it too much mate, seen many nastier spots in rain trays than that.
Looks like you're making some good progress, keep it up
love no rain tray, but question. How are you going to get it rego'd without it?????? (unless I've missed something )
VW: it aint just a car, its a way of life There are few things more satisfying in life than finding a solution to a problem and implementing it

Well ill see if i can weld a new piece in, if i can do it now i might as well to avoid future issues. If not converter and primer over it will have to do. And thanks
good work getting stuck in there George, have you raised the strut towers there or is it just the angle of the photo?
Hey bud. Yes the strut towers have been notched and have been extended. They have been extended by an inch and more i think. Its a pretty shabby job and the welds are horrible and messy, so ill have to fix all that. I also have strut top extenders but wont need them any more :/
Josh, i already answered your question in private

So i got sick of waiting around for whenever my mate isnt using his gas bottle for me to take it. So i got my uncles one and filled it today. Also with pete's advice, i got .06 wire, which works alot better. Anyway, the golf had a roll cage and was bolted to the floor. So today i cut out tiny peices to fit the holes and i plugged them all up. My welding skills are a bit better then when i started haha. Ground down the welds and it turned out great !!
Also paid my rego today, god damn $641 apsolutely ripped my heart in two haha. **** there goes all my money haha
I've been reading this dudes resto on his mk1 and have been looking at how he has shaved his engine bay and it has got me quite motivated. So today after work i got to work. Welded up tons of little holes, and bigger ones too. I made little plates and stuck them behind the hole and welded from the inside, if that makes sense?
Anyway plugged up one of the vent holes for the fan/heater system. The other one will be left there so i can re-circulate the heater. Im going to make a small bottle and hide it for the wind screen squirter thingo, and also hide the expansion tank for the radiotor somewhere as well. Anyone know if there is a way i can completely remove the heater and all pipes, and have another way of having a internal heater of some sort?
Red is increasing,
Thanks to my dad for giving me a hand stripping all the paint to clear surface rust !
Hey pete i was reading this thread on MK1 owners club, and the guy used a Bmw rear de mister for the front. He also used computer fans inserted where the face vents were. I understand the demister but i dont understand why he would put fans on the vents, that would blow the same temp air as the cabin?
Anyway i think this is a brilliant idea, and it will avoid the core leaking and the massive heater box too;
Ive found rust in the most impossible places, and it just keeps coming up more and more. Even though its not impossible, for someone like me where im very limited its hard. Im losing, so, so, so, soooo much motivation. My friend is putting his extremely freakin fast honda for sale pretty cheap and im considering it ...
Anyway more importantly, what do poeple put over bare metal, what kind of primer?
