I guess you can safely say that the limit is around 200bhp for an 8V and possibly around the 300bhp for a 16V I have also seen some mental NA 20V engines too. These top limits will not be much use to us on the road and probably too silly even for a rally car.

I know that drake casted their own 16V heads for racing but these were never sold to the public all the other drake heads were modified vw heads the us company eurospec did their own 8V casting with huge ports etc, these are really dear and possibly still available but I cant find a price on their site, it would be way cheaper to get a 16V.

I'm going to post my engine build soon when I figure out photo's on this site and show what can be done with a small budget and for the fun of it. I wanted to go the 8v so if I chose to build a rally the motor would still be legal.

Be careful comparing cams, you need to have all the figures lift duration at a nominated height and overlap to get a good comparison, the same cam will also do different things in different size engines. Cams also need to be carefully matched to compression ratio's otherwise you could find yourself going backwards in hp

      Hi Hillflog
I would love to see some pics of your engune as well.
I have a Mk1 and was thinking exactly the same as you that I would like to do up the 1600 engine as much as possible as its period for the car.
The other option for posting pics is to stick them on flickr

the eurospec 8v head was a custom cast ,The Eurospec heads have extra metal cast in reinforcing the area surrounding the lifter bores. This makes it possible to run larger diameter lifters, and hence much higher lift cams.) The water passages were redesigned so it wouldn't be breached if you went with the largest valves you can find and had wider opening along it's route for higher coolant volume flow.
The lifter bores were shaved properly so it would hold up from cracks and accommodate the tallest cam configuration.

I had a word with the guy from MMI and he is building a cheap ass grenade race motor just for fun to see how much he can get out of a 1800 8v using stock parts. He has had some input from a couple of good guys with runs on the board and thinks it will come up with a silly rev limit and a bit of poke for a tin top.
MK1 floG soon to have 16v 2L with cable change gbox - need a 16v turbo manifold

Loving the mechanical hillborn style injection & camshaft driven injector pump.
Love to build something with that setup for the street.
Where would you start to source part's?

The VW Brabhem look's like it has the old skool slid throttle setup. But I'd say it's a very early version throttle plate style.

                                Nice find xbgs351

                                Cheers
