Do the mk2 16v run a 8 volt coil system?

Or am I just talking out of my ass? I thought I heard someone say this and I tested the coil and it reads battery voltage as in 14v... Should I put a resistor in or is that normal?

Mk2 should be electronic ignition system with a 12V coil. What 16V is it?

only the points ignition models ran the lower voltage coils.
