1990 Mk2 was not a real GTI, with a detuned 8V which only put out 90bhp. Engine was sourced from Japan, and was detuned for the sake of emissions.
      Euro look 2... Mk2 love!

Engines were made in Germany. Same as US models.
What is a real GTI from 1990 then? Did they still have the K-Jet 112hp motor then?

          Real GTi

When is a GTi not a GTi
If VAG put a GTi badge on a model of its product thats what it would have to be then so whats an Australian sold mk2 Golf GTi then.Who cares what hp motor is in it ,its still a GTi.
          It would still out preform a normally aspirated 1.8 mk4 GTi or a mk3 2.0 8valve GTi.
          It is what it is.

My GLD must be one of the last Mk1 Golfs sold new in Australia - it was first registered (in NSW) on 2nd October 1981. For it's 24th Birthday present on Sunday it's getting new front shocks!

I don't believe it would. The engine had a different compression. BUT it is still a GTI

Australia, UK and Europe had GTI
                South Africa had GTi

phil vw dealers still sold passenger cars in 81 as the passat and golf were ordered with the a prefix chassis....remember delivering the last of em in 81..diesels were most likely the last order vw made .of course the year models were all 1980..... also remember selling a new cl t3 in 88 with a 86 built date.....some of em loved grass growing under them!!!! FYI much debate took place at dealer meetings re the 8v gti...16v was an option but the factory and the importer won't ADR a 16v...I remember the then MD looking at a feasiblity to fit an Oettinger upgrade kit to all 8v mk2's three were fitted and sold on with australian compliance....wonder were they are now? to confirm that all australian delivered GTI 's are factory GTI's and were ordered that way! that is if memory serves me correct all 290 of them.cheers hope this adds a little more to the aussie history of golf

I did not explain that very well, did I?

Yes there were a few 1980 model GLDs imported and were sold until about '82. But they were 1980 models (chassis number 17A).

I have this knowledge 'cause I have been around Golfs for a long time.
I went to the champagne party for the launch of the Golf in Feb '76.
I saw the Scirocco at the Sydney Motor Show in '76(?) I think that six were imported by LNC.
Chris Heyer (ex Golf racer) loaned me one of the early diesels in '77.
I saw the Golf 4 at the factory before it was released.
I supplied my Golf 2 for the press launch of the Golf 4.
My Golfs 1 & 2 appear in magazine photos for the Golf 4.
