    Hey guys.

A few of you know what was going on to some degree here, but for those who don't...

    Thursday:

I got a Facebook message from a friend who told me that there was "An old Golf" in the yard at the Bathurst fire station, surrounded by a heap of hacked up cars.

Chris, Theres a Golf sitting at the fire station in bathurst. i think they are going to cut it up for practise. It has been sitting there for weeks and I keep meaning to tell you about it. Do you want me to take a photo of it for you?
    Friday:

I asked for a picture and my mate sent me a very, very grainy pic of a Mk1 from the front. I sent it to another mate, who said "That bonnet looks like a Swallowtail to me!". The giveaway being the ribs that fade out instead of coming to the front, inward and meeting in the middle (for those of you who don't know the difference).

    Saturday:

As luck would have it, my mother and sister were heading to Sydney for some stupid "shop 'till you drop" deal, so I asked if they could go and have a look for me. My folks are Vee dub rescuers from way back when- My white 16v originally was rescued from a wrecker here in town!

Mum went and had a look herself. While she was there one of the Fireys came out to ask what she was doing. Long story short they opened the gate to the yard so she could go in and take some pictures and have a decent look at it. She looked over it and took some pics for me. Reckoned it was pretty mint, straight, no visible rust etc.. Best of all.. It was a 76 Swallowtail.

I said "I'd better get onto them and see if we can work out a deal". I called and they told me that the wreckers actually owned the cars, donated them and picked up the bits when they were finished. I called the wrecker, no answer. No worries, I'll call on Monday.

    Monday:

I called the wreckers, got an answer. I told them what I was calling about. The bloke said "It's not a bad car, but it has sat here for a long time and no body wanted it, so we figured we'd get rid of it. It's actually a runner if you put oil, water and a battery in it, but it's got an oil leak and a blown head gasket I think."

I asked if I could buy it and they said yes. A price was settled on and I told them i'd be by tomorrow to pick it up.

    Tuesday:

I picked up the car trailer off my Uncle and a chick friend and I headed off to Bathurst. I went to see the wrecker, did the deal with them and went to pick up the car. The Fireys helped me load it, as the rear brakes were sticky and it was a slug to move. Tied it down and off we went.

It's at the workshop now, safe and sound. Has a different key for ignition (on the dash as the original switch failed- You know the drill), a different key for drivers, different for passengers door and another for the hatch! haha.

It's an Auto, standard orange/black interior. Opening 1/4s, siliconed shut. Panels are all pretty damn straight. All trims. No rust i've found on the exterior.

Hope you enjoyed that story. It's not much, but it's good to see another good car miss the scrappers.

I'll get some more, better pics later. The body, doors etc etc is spoken for (going to a very good, special home), but if anyone is after a few bits it's all for sale. Better than seeing it cut up..

damn, wouldn't have minded the whole car!

Good to see it'll get used, rather than just cut up.

Hope it doesn't end up all in parts, if it is as straight and rust free as it sounds.

Don't worry, mate. It's going to a good home! I wouldn't let it go to someone who would do the wrong thing with it, or butcher the original, clean lines.

            Hahaha!

Now I have an income again I'm very tempted. That 83 GX in Adelaide has caught my eye, not sure if I want an earlier example though. Hmmm...

                Nathan it is!

I prefer the earlier cars, but that's personal preference. The later (80+) cars had external brake lines and a few other things that helped make them less susceptible to rust... But a good one is still a good one. Seen plenty of 80+ rust buckets.

pretty sweet find!! you say the doors are spoken for, what would be the chances of nabbing the rear left door handle? only if its black though.

edit: would it fit a '79?

They'd be the wrong type for your year. I've got boxes of the things, pop 'round and pick one up sometime.

Hey mate. No it won't. They're different. I have some later ones though, so i'll find the L/R one for you. They originally came off my '77 w/the 16v.

Stripped this thing today. And boy oh boy is it mint!!

The door cards, trims etc will go in the GLD, along with the carpet and probably the rear parcel shelf, too.

The mint sound deadening will probably go in the 16v. I've removed it and left it out to dry, as usual the passenger floor was damp (hence the surface rust).

I'd say there will be some surface rust under the tar. That's pretty much a given. I think the odometer still works as the trip meter has clicked over to "1" since we've been pushing it around. If that's the case, it means it's a genuine 114k car.

Engine bay is mint. No rad. support panel rust. Some surface rust on the battery tray, but that's it.

Heater core is mint. When I disconnected it and emptied it, fresh bright green coolant came out!

The under dash covers are mint. They'll be going in the 16v.

I removed the seat belts as they're all mint. They'll go in the 16v.

I'll be using the rear seat padding etc and getting it re trimmed for the seat frame on the 16v too.

I seriously can't believe this was going to be cut up.. It's the best shell i've ever seen and i'm so glad I saved it.
