  • mk1 Tyres any recommendations? etc...

my girlfriends golf has rather heavy steering? if anyone can point me to things worth checking be much appreciated.. ( no it aint the tyre pressure)

it has pretty crap tyres on it currently ( 2 dunlops on the back, 2 bridgestones on the front) so we gonna put some new ones on (ah tax time) gf got quoted 90 - 100 bucks for bridgestone premium, goodyear regatta, supercats etc, etc. but these are probably budget? im tempted to shell out a bit more for something a bit better any recomendations, tyres to avoid etc? anyone in adelaide know good places to get em? size 185/65/14r

oh yeah, the guy we bought the car off changed the steering wheel b4 we bought it (but after the gf drove it) the new steering wheel is slightly smaller than the old one maybe this makes the steering sh#t?

when is the steering heavy? at low speeds its very normal, but one the speed pics up its rather light.

ive had a few times when ive jumped into a s class after driving the mk1 and almost steered into a pole!!!

If you want cheaper tyres then go for the standard 175 R13 which are much more common thus being cheaper. ( I had 185 R14 before and when I tried to get new tyres they were about the price quoted and I wasn't happy with that). I am a cheapskate!
As my03 has said the steering is heavy when at low speeds mainly because it was built before power steering was a standard!

            tyres

i run firestone firehawks on 14 inch rims on my mk1 and im very happy with them. If you ring around you can probably get them for about $120 each.

              "Say no-way to Bob Jane's"

I'm rather embarrassed to say I have bob jane tyres...
I need to add they were purchased with the vehicle.
They are the most crap tyres I have ever driven on, In the wet they
slip if you accelerate, slide if you stop, understeer if you corner. add tram
              tracks for real fun!
Dry roads are fine however it's so easy to smoke the tyres with hard braking.
The good thing about them they are wearing out quick with half the rubber gone in 19000 KLM's (front).
I don't drive hard, and get an easy 80000KLM from both my Excel (Goodyear Eagles) and Mazda Bravo with Bridgestone.

Forgot to mention these. Should be around $100 / corner fitted

I bought a set of these from toyo dealer - tyre power, port road

Oh yeah for wheel alignment I swear by light wheel alignment in the city (near Gouger st). No way I'd let bob jane etc do it!

you will have an alighnment problem causing the heavy steering, its very noticable in the mk1. it will have excessive toe in or out... the easiest thing will be to get the tyre place to set the alignnment to:

                  neutral toe
0.07 degree NEGATIVE camber on the front (this is already adjustable).

tell them you want equal camber on each side. if they do all this properly, you should drive away with a big grin. the only thing is, if you have worn steering balljoints getting an alignment done can be a waste of time, but if the car is in good nick then you shouldnt have any trouble.

I had 195/14" GT radials, they stick amazingly well for the first 6 months, then go hard about $106 each but they last for ever

                              HEEEEVEEE Steering

I replaced the strut bearings at the top of the front struts... and it was like driving a new car... much lighter... got Orig German Bilstien from the US (ebay) at a bargain price... they want a fortune for them here.
