    has any one ever re-apolstered a bench seat?

      had a think about doing it myself, it's easily do-able if you have some stiching/sowing skills and a machine with a needle sharp/strong enough to puncture the ribbing which pulls the skin under the frame, it's a fiddly job and will take a lot of time, generally a bench seat isn't to expensive to get reupholstered professionally.
