  • Serious gearbox problem

Came around a corner today (driving normally) lifted off the clutch, accelerated and bang goes the passenger side drive shaft. You could see the inner CV joint rubber was ripped appart. (The drivers side drive shaft looks and feels fine)
I thought it was just the drive shaft because the car is so low and that was the only visible damage but when i replaced the drive shaft the churning noise is still there.

When in gear and trying to lift off the clutch the car doesn't move and makes a horrible churning sound. Speedo bops around a bit if the makes any difference.

Have a blown the gear box or diff? or is it just a stuffed up clutch or pressure plate......

......please tell me its the clutch because ive got a spare one.

So the inner CV is all smashed up?

Did you happen to take a look at the inside of the flange, or the end of the old driveshaft?

Try pull out all the camber, and or raise the suspension, see if that fixes it. Might just be the driveshaft rubbing on the inside of the flange, one of the problems with being super low.

Sounds like a blown CV joint but you say you replaced the entire drive shaft.

Could be the output flange is stripped, or maybe something in the diff. Bit odd the the speedo is moving, that means that the diff carrier is spinning at least.

Sometimes on a very low car the drive shaft can hit inside the drive flange and cause some issues.

Yeah I replaced the whole drive shaft.

Its defiantly something in the gear box. Im amusing its not the clutch because it doesn't make the sound in neutral.
The car goes in to gear but does not move, the gearbox just churns around.

Could be the spider gears then.

(Spyda has blown the spider gears?)

Sounds like a new box for you. Is it a 5 or 4 speed? Might have a spare 4 speed.

I managed to snap the teeth off my pinion shaft in the diff coming round a corner. Made a horrible churning sound, still managed to drive it home. Mines an auto tho.

              LOL
The spider gears are the smaller ones in the diff?

How does a car with f*** all power brake a GTI box? I don't do skits or drive very hard. Would stalling cause it?

Stalling won't cause it but being very low can.

What happens is that the drive shafts hit on the output flanges and hammer the spider gears through the output shafts.

Best option for another box would be a MK3 one from Centre Rd. wreckers, they're only $350 if you pull it out yourself.

If your box is a close ratio one I'd be interested in whatever bits remain if you don't choose to fix it.

                  Thanks for the help mate.

Ill pull out the box out tomorrow and open it up to have a look. Ive got a 4speed box out of a mk2 GL but I dunno if thouse parts are interchangable.

There is a Cordoba at pick a part closer to home, would that be the same box as a mk3?

Yep Cordoba 5 speeds are a straight swap for the one you've got.

                    Usually CHB code box.

                    ratios are 3.45 / 1.94 / 1.37 / 1.03 / 0.85 and a 3.67 final drive ratio. One of the taller gearboxes, great for the highway.

Turns out the other drive shaft inner CV is broken aswell. I didnt notice this earlier as it was prity dark.

Why would it brake both CVs at the same time? its like it went in to revers while doing 70kmh forward.

The transmision fluid was an awful coffee color.

Sounds like dumb luck to me..

Change the trans fluid to Redline MTL while you're at it.. If you don't mind spending a few bucks. It's top stuff.

JMac can get it for you quickly and at a reasonable price.
