Mine wouldn't read above 70* on both the MFD and VDO gauge, but the fan would come on though! See what happens when I put the new thermostat in.

My speco gauge said 95 degrees when stock gauge read 3/4.
the sensor for the speco gauge is in the top hose flange that bolted to the head
I just grabbed the bottle, it said for 90's engines, so i got it... (engine is mk3 engine, 1995 i think matt said)

I will flush it and run something like 10w40w and see how it goes.
If it's a reasonably fresh Mk3 engine then 5w-40 or 10w-40 would be the go - esp in Tassie as it starts to cool down. I had a 1998 Mk3.5 2.0 and used to run 5w-30 castrol Edge Sport in it & it loved it but if you went & checked the lube guides on the Shell, Mobil, castrol, Nulon or Penrite sites then I think you'll find they recomend 5w/10w-40.

Your guage is for water temp isn't it? The water heats up a lot quicker than the oil. I'd think 10-15mins for water, 20-30 mins for oil. I have no idea what the normal water temp is for the engines. I'd think just under 100c would be about right but a pressurised system should be good for up to 115c (?) before it boils

Mines linked to the VDO gauges and the MFD to the oil temp, bith read approx 5* within each other, at about 70*. Thermostat is OEM 87*

            He's right

            I've got near 300,000km on my 2.0 8v.
            I tried a 20w-50, with all sorts of issue's, it's back on a Mobil 10w-40 running much better/consistently.

Just waiting for the oil filters to arrive, as anything local is supercrap stuff or or over priced.
