  • K-jet , Twin Carbs or Fuel injection???

    Hey guys, i have a 78 2 door project that ive been working on for the past year.
    I bought a 1.8 16v Kr motor for it with complete k-jet system. Now the tricky part, i have a set of 40dcoe webbers complete with linkages and manifold. And i have a ****tator management system with 350cc injectors and ABF fuel rail!
    Which setup do you reckon i run with? Carb, K-jet or EFI?
    Ex: MK1 citi 1.4i 140db 64kw
    Ex: '96 VR6
    Current: Mk1 Citi .:R 1.8i 90kw
    Current: Mk1 78 2door narrow bumper 1.8 16v Kr Project

    They still use carbs in formula 1 because they are that good

    I'd go with the K-jet personally, as long as you have everything. It can be made to run really well.

    350cc will be far too big, standard 8L S3 is 318cc from memory and that's big enough to run nearly 300hp. You'll be lucky to pull much more than half that.

      I converted from K-Jet to carbs and the car went faster

        Don't get me wrong Pete, I like the noise they make and the way they go. I have been in a few MK1 16Vs in my time. One with over 200hp, running carbs.
        I have built a magazine featured one, that had K-jet on it. It started and drove like a factory car. Carbs on the street always seemed like hard work. Stuff was always going wrong.
        In an everyday situation, for the effort of making it run correctly, injection wouldn't have been the biggest limitation.
        Plus the the economy on the 2 that I am thinking of was just dire.

              Thanks for the input guys, i am looking for a bit of power and reliability hence why i replacedthe 1.6 with the Kr.
              My only prob with the carb is, ive heard they are a pain to set correctly,now there are no decent mechs in Botswana which is gonna make it difficult for me!
              Ive never seen anyone running K-jet on this side of the world as everyone converts to MP9, is it expensive to maintain?

                K-jet is mechanical and very simple, control pressure regulators sometimes die making the engine hard to start. They run badly until warmed up.
                They don't like water getting into the fuel, which was a common snag in the UK with rotten filler necks.
                Fuel pumps need to be on good form too.
                There's adjustment available in the system for tweaking. Biggest downside really is the ignition as that is fixed by the ECU which isn't chippable. Except for the ECUs on the PL motor. You can use a piggy back/interceptor, I had Racelogic V-SAM on my Corrado which worked great.

                  The reason people move away from Kjet is because they don't understand it. It is extremely complicated when you get into the nitty gritty, but if you want to use the standard gear and have the patience to sit down and read up on it, as Gavin has said..

                      that sounds good mate carbs does = mega tuning and fiddling but worth it for the brave, I had my 16v on k jet as set up by Andrew Robinson and i had a blast with it!

                          MK2 Golf/Jetta Haynes manual has the diagrams. You probably want the MK1 Golf Haynes as well. Then you can combine the 2 systems easier. This is how I did the car that I built up.

                          Essentially you have the loom that runs the engine, this has a battery feed, ignition live and a ground. Then there's the loom that interfaces with the instruments, oil pressure lights, alternator light, starter motor etc.
