  • 1977 Mk1 - Keep and restore or part out?

I have a 1977 Mk1 Golf. It was my first car but since returning from 3+ years overseas the rust is getting to it and I need to make the hard decision to get rid of it, restore it or donate its organs.

I'll put it to the forum: To part or not to part.

I have reason to believe that this car was a hatchback and was cut down into a cabrio after an accident.

Here are some photos to help you decide.

    pics not working mate.

Depends on skills, money, time and desire.

If you don't want it, no point fixing it, if you don't have the cash, no point fixing it etc.

If it is a cabby that's been made from a 2 door, chances are it's not nearly as good as a proper cabrio is, and is probably a bit ropey. But that's just hypothesising.

Get some pics up , use a photobucket account perhaps

I would say that if it's a '77 it's probably a chop top rather than a true cabriolet which didn't arrive in Oz til later.

If you do part it out, I would be VERY interested in the window regulator from the driver's door. I need one ASAP.

And yes, it does look very rusty. Lots of work there I'd say.

      Cheers

Looks to have had extensive previous bodgey bodywork, no phosphating / 2 pac primer so the elements just keep chewing away at the steel without due protection.

As said. lotsa dollars and / or lotsa time to bring this back so maybe a good time to part it out.

Just done a 79 - 4 door here, floors looked a lot better than yours but i could still pass the pliers "thru the floor " ..
            Lots of MK 1 Scirocco's...

If it aint a MK 1 then it must be a donor car ??

            Cheers,

              good points

Many of these comments reiterate what I was thinking - that its going to take a whole bucket of $$$ and time to correct a shoddy job. I remember a few months after buying it that I was rolling to a red traffic light and my brake pedal made it to the floor with no resistance - thankfully there were no cars blocking the "turn left anytime with care" lane.

It was fun while it lasted.

If you have any questions about buying and shipping some parts, let me know - I will happily start breaking her up bit by bit as you all need them.

PM me for contact details. If you're in Brisbane, come and take a look.

Window regulator? They are manual wind-up windows.

The bit in the door that makes the window go up and down is called the regulator. It attaches to the handle/crank. They're definitely used in manual wind up windows. They getting very hard to find and are a pain to take out and replace.

                  Kind of like this:

I now have a couple of replacement parts on their way to me so hopefully I'm sorted. But I'll definitely let you know if I still need it and it's still available.

                  Thanks.
