Just in case you guys are considering it, i have proven that its possible to drive a mk1 in 20cm of snow, with chains on, in the dark, while its snowing.... with no clutch..
it was -6, so all i can say is thank god for antifreeze ...
to cut a long story short, i took my mk1 to perisher on tuesday last week and it snowed all day and i didnt leave the slopes till it was dark. So i just managed to get the chains on the front wheels (never do this on a lowered car!) with my poor frozen hands.. then when i tried to drive off something in my gearbox or clutch gave way (possibly due to cold temp???) and so i had no clutch!
so i managed to drive along at about 20kph most of the way till i was gladly overtaken by a snow plow
which took the worst of the snow away and meant i could speed up a bit and eventually get below the snowline.. shifting was not easy cos i dont have a tacho and i couldnt hear the engine over the rumble of the chains.. but i managed to get 2nd and 3rd ok..
i later found out that over 20 cars had been stranded on Kosiouzko Rd that night ... i love my golf
i also drove home from jindabyne to newy without a clutch on saturday night.. not the best idea for your starter motor, but cheaper than getting it towed!!..
call me crazy or silly but its all part of the fun of owning old cars!
