anyone know of an aftermarket or other vw model 8000 rpm tacho that will bolt into a std GLS dash cluster, not looking for a monster tach or anything stupid like that to bolt onto the dash, want to upgrade the factory cluster for a stock look

yeah all good ideas but i want a stock looking unit to mount up behind the dash cluster and work with the existing factory circuit board, the 16V unit i think will be very complicated to get to work as the foil backing circuits are completely different (already have one) and the porsche units are much bigger than the Golf mk1 unit, sigh i may have to bite the bullet an build a carbon dash with a Racepak LED instrument cluster like this intergrated into it,
Am hoping to not have to go down this path though because i like the old school 70's look of the stock cluster77 Golf tarmac rally

Stock tachos are good for about 14K. There's a label on the back of them that says either 11 K or 14 K rpm.
8000 RPM gets the needle into the fuel gauge area though. Maybe you could make up an new face without the fuel gauge and extend the graduations.
Another option is the Porsche 924 tacho setup.79 MK1 Golf Wreck to Race / 79 MK1 Golf The Red Thread / 76 MK1 Golf Kamei Race Car

I dig this. I assume you're a crafty guy.
After building the new engine which sees 8500~9000 the old 7000 tach was rather useless. So here is my approach to solving this issue and still retaining an oldskool/OE look.
Basically retrofitted the guts from a generic 10000 rpm tach, scanned and photo shopped a new face plate, got the fine people at Kinko's to print in on a label paper and put it all together.
The bottom part of the tachometer case has to be trimmed as the after market tach is slightly larger
By pure luck the hight of the new assebly is same as OE and so is the needle shaft so the OE needle fits directly on to the new mechanism. You may have also notices that the circuit board now sits outside the cluster. Is is much larger so there is no room to hide it inside
Here is a pic of the original face and my printed one

Hey i have pulled the standard mk1 dash out and replaced it with a mk2 dash, all aftermarket gauges this includes new sensors on the motor but i have now installed a Porche 911 Revs (sourced from Canberra VW (does go to 10,000 RPM), autobach black old school water temp, fuel, oil temp, fuel and orginal mk1 speedo - i have then fitted a led light set into the whole lot (if they didint have lights already built in). I have also whole sawed the excact holes and a mouting plate (made of aluminumn) and mounted it too the mk 2 dash - it looks the part but has taken a lot of work. Will take a photo and post shortly..1980 Mk1 Golf Tarmac Rally Car 168HP ATW, 1976 MK1 Golf GTI SCEFI 248HP ATW, 1993 Golf Cabrio (Stock)

I'm looking at running a dual zone 9k Autometer tacho in the Mk1 instrument cluster.. I have a few busted instrument clusters so Timmy and I are going to hack a busted one up first to work out how to make it fit and then go to town on the one we're going to use when we work it out..
I have seen Porsche 924 instruments used.. But i'm not sure about the technical bits on that one.

Thats the stuff i was looking for, i may how ever reprint the face plate and alter the input sensors with a rectfier to get it to work with the standard range of movement and read correctly to 9000 rpm (my engines ignition hard cut)77 Golf tarmac rally
