With Pete away I am left with asking you lot all the stupid questions I would normally bother him with.....
    Been reading a great "build" thread on the vortex. Once running he found that his car was 'eating' inner CVs, he made this comment;
Turns out My Mk1 had a 88-> Mk2 tranny and the axles that fitted the tranny was to long. therefor, they stressed the C.V. Joint so much that they simply broke in peaces.

Huh??? I have an ATH and another AUG 5 speed with 100mm flanges, should I be worried??

What axles are you going to run? That quote says "the axles for that tranny". Does that mean he ran mk2 axles? With my 100mm flanged gearbox I still ran the standard mk1 axles however because the 100mm CV's are thicker than the 90mm ones I had to machine a few mm (can't remeber how much) from the shoulder of the axles to accommodate them. I have never had a problem in either of the cars i have done this on. I don't think the inner CV's will ever die.

We have used std MK1 shafts, with 100mm CV grafted on to the inside end, and big-a$$ed (transporter??) outers.
Pete is running a pair in his 20v caddy so I guess I should not worry, it just seemed to be a strange thing to have a problem with.

Out of interest what did you do for the outer CV's? Did you have to modify the driveshafts or the hub at all? I want to beef up my outers at some stage as they would be the weak link in my setup.

I remember that we had to machine an extra circlip groove on the end of the spline, I think it was the outers.... Unfortunately they are all assembled now so I cannot go and look. There is also a chance that the 'spider' will need a little attention with the die-grinder - not quite at that stage yet, but Peter's went in without a drama.

Ahh that looks like the circlip... so it is on inner end after all.

OK so it looks like you didn't have to mod much on the outers. Hmmm I wonder if they were the early style or the later style driveshaft. One has a circlip towards the outer of the spline, one has the circlip towards the inner. Thanks, I'll look into it once I sought out some other things first.

to use 90mm shafts on 100mm cv all you have to do is lengthen the step on the shaft on the inner edge so yes the cir clip engages, from memory any way havent tackled it yet though so speaking in third person

great thread people, this is what we're supposed to be about!

between mollins and I (both of us with 90mm inners) we have gone through 5 inners and 4 outers in 18 months.

i love the idea of using transporter outers - are there any size issues with the uprights etc?

Mk3 GTI, VR6 and T4 Outers are all the same.

You will be alright Charles as you are using Mk1 Shafts.

The guy in the Tex thread was using Mk2 Shafts in a Mk1 which will bugger it as they are 5 or 10mm too long.

The same thing happens if you use Mk1 shafts in a mk2.

With regards the Mk3, the VR6 Outers are bigger than the 2L and 1.8, but they swop over ok.

You just use whichever shaft suits your suspension width, standard or plus suspension.

Good thread this, lets have more info on here.

                            This info is spot on!
I've also had to carry out this mod as well using mk1 shaft's. I used the standard outer CV's & have only hammered one of them.

Also after nearly 300+k, my inner 100mm's started to grind on big bump's (that & the car was already low), so I removed both the inner's & swapped the gut's of them around & never had a problem since. They say you shouldn't do this, but I thought I'd give it a go anyway.

how the hell can you go through that many?

I've only ever done one CV & I've rally bashed, dragged, burnout's (incl. reverse), raced, jumped etc. over a 400+k period.
