  • Does anybody know what the Black starter wire does ?

does anybody know what the black wire does and its purpose, which connects to the starter oppersite the red one. i know it will turn over with just the red one connected, a deisel starter only uses the red wire, any idears? i have just put a deisel starter in and am getting weak spark while cranking, its a 575cc batt, no probs there, ,fat earth cables, just thinking this black wire is causing lack of crank spark

Ironically I found this out the other day. It connects to the starter and sends power back to the coil and to the cold start injector for extra fuel on coldstart!

Connect it to the + on the battery and you will hear the injector open.

I have a Mk3 starter in mine which also does not have that connection, so I will probably put a Mk2 starter in.

This answer may not solve this problem, but should help your cold start issues.

It made my car coldstart for the first time in 3 months

That wire gives the coil 12 volts to start the engine. Once started the coil runs on 9 volts through a resistor wire from the fuse panel.
