  • thoughts on potential alternative to a mk1...

Sorry wasn't sure where to post this, but what are peoples thoughts/experiences (if any) with the peugeot 205 GTI, have yet to drive one but am thinking about it as an alternative to a mk1 (although the golf is far more aesthetically pleasing to the eye in my opinion)
Cheers and sorry if I posted this in the wrong place...

I haven't worked on a 205 myself, but having cut my teeth on a Mk1 Golf and still driving them on and off for almost 20 years, the Mk1 is an old car but with some work and attention they are very satisfying and easy to work on as well.

You also can't go past that Giugiaro angular design that keeps the design crisp even to this day.

Experience has shown that parts are getting harder to source, but with a few parts retailers on your side, almost anything is possible.

A bit subjective I know, but for someone who wants to learn about DIY car repairs and maintenance, you can't go past the Mk1.

          yeah i've been looking around.
either a 205 or a mk1 i'm still undecided... the looks of the mk1 vs the performance of the 205 GTi...

also the fact they are a decade newer has got the backing from my girlfriend, despite the silly power to weight ratio...

what makes you say that? with the 205 being a much newer vehicle, logic says it would be, to some degree, more reliable?

(planning on using these cars as a daily might i add)

Ummmmm, don't want to sound obvious but perhaps a MK2

PS: I think you'd find parts would be easier to source for a VW as opposed to a Pug
......depends if you can find a good parts supplier for either

MK2 - *Insert list of dealer purchased extra's/standard features here*
80 series - The MK2's BIG, Sooty, polar opposite...

I think it all depends on what sort of car you want.
I used to have a 205 gti and it was probably the most fun car i've ever owned. They are fast, handles very well and look great. I don't think you could have more fun on a tight, twisty road in any other car in the same bracket.
However, being French it was fragile, the dash squeaked and the electrics were iffy but mechanically it never let me down. I owned one in England so getting parts wasn't an issue, but i'd imagine it would be over here.
as for the MK1 they are tough little cars but you won't get a comparable version (i.e a GTI) so you'd have to mod it to get it to a similar driving experience.

                        If it were my money i'd get a 205 or a MK2 GTI (or an MX5 )

to most people that would be obvious, although i'm really not a fan of MK2s... theres just something about them i thoroughly dislike...
the fact the pugs french and parts etc could be a b!tch to get on to is putting me off it...

...that and they don't even compare to a mk1 in my opinion...

Haha, its ok your allowed to have your own opinion.

MK2's are chubby MK1's, and some don't like that 'phat' look..... or the extra weight
But being a VW, they seem to grow on you, I never used to like the look of pre 70's Beetles, now I adore them!
