  • The best method of "caging" a mk1..

    Hey guys,

I'm thinking with my new mk1 i will prob take out the back seal, create a false floor from the boot through to right behing the front seats and carpet that area, and then put a bolt in 4 (or what ever is best) point roll cage

I am not handy with the welder and I have no idea how to get my hands on a cage.. help?? haha

and let me know what you think about this idea..

Most 4wd centre's can knock up a check half cage for your Mk1.

But if you plan on doing track days etc later on you will need a Cams approved cage so you will then have to go and see and engineering/race shop and have one built. Will not be cheap...

So a 4wd centre would be cheap?

What do you want the cage for?

If you're going racing then you'll need it properly done to current regs as James pointed out.

If you're just after the look I've seen "cages" made from exhaust pipe or even PVC plumbing pipe.

A 4wd place could bend up a hoop and legs for you but you'd never be allowed on a race track. The officials would prefer no cage at all to a non-approved one.

Just for looks i'd like a nice stainless one if possible! but it sounds as though no one knows of a company that make them for mk1's? or some dude who happens to have on in his back yard?

Police and insurance would look extremely upset to see a pvc cage in a car....

I think the best thing would be to get some PVC and belt you over the head with it!, just kidding Josh, you're wasting your time with a fake one and it will make the car impratical for normal use and be a police magnet, not worth it mate.

Might as well make one out of swimming noodles... at least it'd be colourful.

European cage regs for road and race are very different to those here and there's a wide variety of quite acceptable (to Europe) bolt-in cages.

Sounds like you're on the right track to make something that is illegal on both the race track and on the street.

                            This is how it's done.

Your best bet Josh is to save some coin and get a cams approved cage fabricated. Then you will have a proper cage you can use on the track when you will want to put the mk1 on a track, and one that could save your life if you were to have a crash on a public street rather than a PVC pipe or exhaust tubing plowing through your back
