    In my youth yes.

    In half is too much

1 and a half coils looks very low, one coil is about right.

Makes the car handle like a go kart and limits rear passengers.

I`m not encouraging anyone to cut springs, but you need to remove it from the strut and then remove one whole piece from the bottom, but so that it still sits in the cup at the top of the strut. Apparently you are meant to use a hacksaw, not a grinder to keep the heat out of the spring.

Read something about using the hacksaw too. Definitely not recommended, but if you MUST, cut only as much as the dead coils. This is not my experience, only from what I hear.

i have cut down several sets of springs , and in my experience i cant see anything wrong with it. ok its not ideal but for a cheap fix it definately works.

i use a 1mm cutting disc to minimise heat but again i dont think , unless you used an oxy torch that the heat from one cut would hamper the springs

When I first bought my Mk1, the uni student that I bought it off had cut the springs - real nice and low and fully sick bro.

But they had been cut too far and the right rear spring had fallen out of the bracket so the poor little golf looked like it had one flat tyre!

Anyway, I've put in a used set of original full / entire springs in until I can afford to lower the little beastie.

The ride was quite firm, even harsh, with cut springs - something to do with screwing with the pre-tension settings of the springs when they are cut. Maybe not so noticable in a much heavier car

                          wouldnt advise it...but....ummmmmm.
my mk1 has cut king springs. problems are it stuffs up your spring rate and your springs wont remain captive...(unless u drill a few hols around the top and base and cable tie the springs in place...looks good lifting a wheel for 3 wheel motion coming out of bottle shops) dodgeyyy!!!

ive generaly found take more out of the back than the front if you want it to sit level. 2and a half rear, 1 and a half front for kings is how mine sits....

i wouldn't suggest going any more...bumpstops will bounce u off the road mid corner =(

The bit that shocked me (no offence geezer) is the tyre size. Now respect in that original VW engineers put wait for it................................................ 225 width tyres on a prototype mk1 GTI but I'd ask did you really need that MUCH tyre on the road?

well.. im doing it today after work...

i think im gonna cut 1 and a half rear and 1 and 3/4 front

reason so low is because im compensating for my new low profile tyres on my 14's this week.. i dont want any guard/tyre gap too big

                              will take pictures

                              cyas
