G'day all, I have a new Golf which I understandd it a Mk1! I know nothing about it yet so was hopeing to get some help from those in the know.

The Build date is Sept 1980 and thee compliance plate has GOLF174D on it...
I understand it was a desiel but now has a 1.6 petrol in it - is 4 on the floor also.

Attached is a pic... it sure needs some TLC as it has been sitting in the same place since 2001! Started her on the weekend though after some messsing about....

    Welcome!

That looks lke a pre-loved Golf! Colour looks Silver Diamond Metallic (same as mine). There's a sticker on the boot floor that'll tell you its paint.

A pity the diesel isn't still in it. I wonder if the 'box is still the diesel box??

You've come to the right place if you're a Mk1 lover

Indeed someone has invested in the body kit and a new paint job although I have some work to do on some bits and pieces of rust... Will have a look at the colour and ask the previous owner if it was resprayed in the factory colour. Looking at it I assume it was

The old desiel blew up apparently and as it was being driven in a remote area it was decided a petrol transplant was a better idea parts wwise. Not sure about the box - as i learn the questions to ask I will see what more the previous owner can tell me.

This car was a gift and I am pretty stoked!!!

Thanks! I have another project on the boil at the moment (HQ 1 tonner) so I plan to keep the work on thee Golf simple to kick things off. Basically i need to replace a heap of coroded wires and old fuel hoses etc to begin with.

The keys were lost back in 2001 I need to replace the ignition and steering locks as well. I have been told I might have been able to get hold of a key if I had searched however in my hast I cut out the steering lock/ ignition so I could hot wire it! Not sure where I will hunt these parts down though!

There is a bit of rust around the windows which I will tackle in time...

Other usual bits and pieces need to be done like oil, filters leads and plugs etc...

I look forward to getting it on the road within a reasonable short period of time as a daily driver as I am sure it will be fantastic on fuel!

Yeah, lady luck came my way this time! Hope she sticks around and it turns out to be sound!

Not sure what the body kit is but plan to go over it this weekend, clean out the redbacks and see what I will have to deal with to deal with. I am yet to quiz the previous owner about it's history but will find out about the kit. Really looking forward to getting stuck into it, might have found another addiction!

                            Classic not plastic...

Hmm. Having spend a few days on this site and had the chance to check out some awson looking MK1's I have come to the conclusion that the body kit on mine looks, well how do I say... over the top!

Might have to drop it on its back side, change rims and give it some real hp and see how I feel then OR take it off and get back to something more origanal.

What do people think - rip it off or stick with...

Totally and only personal taste mate, some people will say looks bad strip it off, some will say looks great where can I get the body kit.
If it was me, I'd probably take some photos and play around in an image processor, try some ideas (wheels, colours etc), look at some others (lots here), find something I really like and aim for that. Keeping the kit, you could come up with something really wild and original, or take it off and go for the cool euro look. Gotta be something that you really like tho.
