I'm guessing that a TS Passat manifold and a DGAV from a Cortina just bolt straight on to one another or is there a need for an adapter plate?

That's right they were made for each other! No need for an adaptor plate.

There is an adaptor that will allow the DGAV to go on a standard 1600 manifold, it's basically a funnel. I doubt performance would be fantastic.

I've been running one for a while, the 1600 it was on was stuffed but the carby let it rev beyond 7000 RPM. (Obviously I didn't care about this motor!). The motor didn't have a lot of compression which is probably why it didn't pull too well from idle.

In a traffic light drag race you could light up the 195 G'Grids if you went heavy on the clutch.

Compared to the stock carby, it actually idles properly! The manual choke works well although there's also versions of this carb with electric or water based auto chokes.

A couple of weeks ago I swapped the dud 1600 out for a Cordoba 1800. I put the same carb back onto the fresh motor. Wow! Now everything is working as it should (almost) take off from idle is smooth and you can really feel the secondary venturi kick in when you floor it. On a wet road you can break traction in first or second by squeezing the throttle.

The problem I've got now is that I've got a bit too much fuel pressure because I installed an electric fuel pump. There's a pressure reg on the way in the next couple of days. The effect of this is over fuelling at low RPM when the fuel pressure is too much for the needle valve in the carb. It's making tuning a little tricky and it can sort of chuff back out the aircleaner when you shut it off. The pressure reg should sort all this out.
