Hey DUBY... you never know on the parts scene.... Almost all parts are now available (at a price) for the split Kombis, not through VW, but still, available.... Golf Mk1 parts too will no doubt become readily available aftermarket with decent build quality... Some parts of course are just that hard to find.... But that Mk1 is mint.... I'd be happy to drive that anywhere...
I have great respect for the air cooled guys, I think what they manage to do is amazing but the mk1 is only 30 years old and if bits from them are not available on much never cars then they don't exist from VW, they can't even give you part numbers as most of the equipment that the information is stored on does not exist. The mk2 is going the same way and as I said now parts from the mk3 range are being removed.
The same situation does not exist for BMW drivers, virtually any car, any year and the vast majority of bits can still be sourced via a dealer in the uk. Why can't VW do the same.
