Couple of noob Questions...

Alrighty, so... bought my first Golf, now looking at doing some servicing...

Have a few Questions,

Best Oil for the 1.8 16v engine? is there one everyone uses, or are they much of a muchness....

Webstore's for parts... i did a quick google search and realised there were a few out there, is there a forum favorite? (Also, if anyone knows a shop in the ACT that stocks Mk1 Parts, that'd be awsome)

and now for the real big 'un,

The Gearshift on the Mk1 is real 'sloppy". as far as i can see, the box has a nice solid feel to it, but between the stick and the box it just goes... now it appears the rod attached to the gearstick ends in a 'square' box through which a selector pin sits, the pin is then pushed by this box... (i dunno, might have to grab pics if im making no sense)

The pin is just sitting in the middle of the box, and theres a whole lotta play in the linkages before they actually move the pin, am i missing a bush here? or if i make up a square bush, is it gonna stop me from changing gears?

It's a 5speed box if that helps.

Welcome.

Most people have 'favorite' oils, I generally use Castrol GTX (different grade for the colder and warmer parts of the year) because it's semi-mineral and both my cars are old. Any oil that states it's fine for a modern engine would be fine for a 16V.

There's a few webstores. Most of the smaller parts can be cheaper/easier to buy from America (where MK1 Golf is a 'VW Rabbit'), stores like German Auto Parts or GAP, there's a few good ebay stores, MK1 Autohaus, and GSF car parts (off the top of my head). Most of the stuff is available locally though.
