  • New mk 1 newbie checkin in!

    Hey all, hows it going?
Hi,I'm Jarred and I love cars. I've always like cars, mainly anything from the 70's, including Golf mk 1's! I havn't got a mk 1 atm, (i currently drive a Ford Laser - woot.) but i am looking at buying one soon, infact I'm going to look at one this weekend hopefully! It looks really neat and hopefully has no hidden rust! My plans are, wether I get this one or another, is to make it look very 70's; so steelies, plenty of chrome, bit of a retrimmed interior (velour, shagpile?? haha), wood rimmed steering wheel (as off the old passats i think?), lower the suspension a bit, old school roof rack maybe? and go nuts on the engine - eventually. Well atleast, thats the plan!
Heres the like to the car, tell me what you think!

    (I hope that works!)
anyways, just thought i'd say hi!

    peace
    Jarred

Go for it mate - it looks pretty tidy.
If its been well looked after (as it seems to be), it would be a good find alright.

Welcome to the forum. Hope you enjoy it here.

Nice find. Look's like a solid car for a good starting point.

Look's like a very late 76 or 77 to me. Missing the swallowtail rear bever panel.

Picture tells a thousand words.. but those words are any good - if you was looking at the wrong picture aye?
I went and checked out that mk 1 yesterday with GOlfMan, and well, i was dissappointed, it's defiantly not worth wat hes asking, much closer to about 1000 - 1200 of mah hard earned.
                        On the good side, the interior was in really good nick, besides for the dash, which was stuffed, the engine gearbox susp and all other mechanical stuff seems to be working fine and there doesn't seem to be any structural rust, but;
there are so many dings and sratches and dodgey repairs in her! they must have happened after the photos were taken. The bonnet is damaged and misaligned so i will need a new one and the bumpers both need to be really straightened.
but the best part (which the guy neglected to mention before I took her for a drive) is that the speedo - is stuffed.it was showing 110km/h when i was stll in 3rd at about 3,000rpm... i doubted its accuracy.. but yet it has a RWC, so who knows how much else the mechanic "skipped" over?
anyways, i think thats all GolfMan will tell me if i've forgotten anything but yea, what do you guys think? anyone else had problems with thier speedos?
                        appreiciate the input!

The speedos do break mate and the bumpers get dinged. It is 30 years old.

Go have a look at the GTI which they are all talking about in the "whats on ebay section". I think its in Frankston.

2 Door and might be a super rare GTI. Golf Man will hate you if it is LOL
Needs a bit of work, but is inherantly more valueable.

Sounds like the typical MK1 for sale mate you will find alot like that, all mk1 dashs crack, speedos dash clusters yeah alwas play up mate list goes on and on with mk1s, in QLD not sure about other states finding a mk1 in genral is hard finding one that runs is hard one with a roadworthy YEAH RIGHT!!!

so it came down to buying the most complete car and going from there if you are a true enthuisest you'll see the good over the bad panel work is easy fixed id more look at how complete the car is all the interior trims are in place grill is complete lights are in good nick, most of the electrics work most likely the heater wont and rust holes under the car and alwas look at the back of the engine bay where water sits and at the top side where the body splits seen a few bad ones its a mk1 golf hard to find a perfect one and if you do i bet itll cost you $$$$$ but when buying a mk1 this is the most usefull advice cause it has bitten me int he ass make sure you budget for things to go wrong have a few hundered left over trust me its a mk1

yeh the photos really did make it look the goods, but i really was dissapointed with the shape of the body for the price, the bumpers were standard 30yr old issue and to be expected but all round a bloody good car to start on i think... get rid of the bloody awefuly solex that's choking the engine and it'll go bloody nice too
but the rear end just below the tail light has been badly panel beaten and the section needs to be cut out and a straight section welded in its place, it didnt have any rust in the sills or in the usualy spots on the guards or the tailgate. if the price can be talked down to a more "realistic" figure then it'd be a good buy!
