rebuilding '79 gld

hey everyone,
i've had the gld for a while now and with 620,000km its due for a rebuild but i'm having trouble finding parts to do this!!! is it becoming impossible to get parts for these motors now or am i just looking in the wrong places???

i want to keep the car as stock as possible so i dont want to a conversion.
its the 1.5 ck diesel

A bit of searching you can find almost anything, not to sure if your looking local or interstate for bits but here is a site of interest they specialize in diesels, http://www.partsplaceinc.com/product...ts.aspx?page=0 Ive had this place bookmarked for a while now i also have a gld. Im sure they will ship if you ask but expect to pay .

That's a **** load of K's!

This US site has just about everything you'd need as far as gaskets go, probably bearings as well.

Although, it can be a little bit unclear because it is an American site, with their different models and years of production. As long as you know exactly which bits you need you'd be fine.

yeah lots of km's but still can get up to 135km/h pretty easy
only thing done to the engine is injectors and injector pump.

I haven't bought anything from this seller yet, but try Auto Parts at AutohausAZ - OEM Auto Parts - Discount Replacement Parts, Resources and Car Care Tips - Do a search for a 1979 Rabbit Diesel and you should come up with this menu:

From my quick inspection, Under "Engine Parts, Seals and Gaskets" I could see that they have main bearing sets, piston rings, and all the gaskets and seals you need. Now is a good time to take advantage of the 90 cent us dollar too!

I don't need any engine parts for mine, but I am planning on going to these guys for a new coolant reservoir, window winders, door handle body gaskets, interior light and the other miscellaneous items that I couldn't find at the wreckers.

Would be great to see your progess during the rebuild process seeing as we have identical cars!

Being diesel will run forever if its running fine all id do is get the head done, valve stems are the common problem with them bottom end will keep going. pop the head off send to machine shop no need to look for parts.

I've heard of bottom ends giving up the ghost and loosing compression too, but more than likely it's the head that'll go.

Comp is quite high on the 1.5's, so it'd be worth while to get it checked out imo.

(iirc, it's meant to be 23:1 compression)

OP - despite what everyone has done pointing you to overseas stores, its actually not too hard to get hold of parts in australia. The usual places to start are Tooley imports in Hornsby NSW and HSY autoparts who have warehouses all over the place nowadays.

The yanks pretty much never got any 1.5 diesels which makes buying the pistons a bit tricky from the US. However, you can get valves, stem seals, bearings, bolts etc locally. You ought to be able to get ring sets still aswell. At 620,000km, you are likely to go oversize if you rebuild it and you might need to jump to the third oversize depending on the piston availability.

Failing all that, there are even some local's with 1.5D engines just sitting in their sheds... like me.

23.5:1 to be exact - 23:1 is the 1.6 engine
