new cam

i bought a Golf GTI Mk1 New Performance hi-lift Camshaft

said to give a 10hp+ from a solid tappet engine setup, i have a 77gls. is there anything i need to do besides getting the head machined to fit the cam.

should i get a slightly bigger carb and new dizzy

first time engine modder so need some extra help.

also, if in adelaide does anybody know where i can take the head to get machined that won't cost an arm and leg

Why machine the head mate?? You need to have the tappet clearances done but that should be it? I would make sure that the dissy and carb you have are working tip top.

cheers for the heads up, the guy i bought it off said i would have to get it machined so was just going off what he said. carb is pretty good just need to do something about the choke and as far as i can tell the dizzy is going ok too.

if you want to get some power out of it, get something other than a standard carb! BIg cam won't help nearly as much if you have the standard choker solex on there..

If it's all out performance that you're after, a set of twin 40mm DCOE webers would be great, but most probably overkill!

I'm not expert, but I'd look at getting a single DCOE weber (or Dellorto equivalent) or maybe a DGV series weber. Either of these carbs will be a phenomonal upgrade over a standard carb, and let the engine breathe all the way through the rev range (and take the most advantage of the new cam!)

Is the cam off ebay??? i watched one sell a few days ago quoting 10hp and suited for solid lifter engines. If it is i asked the seller a few questions and it was a web cam all round street performance virsion grind 111.

Unfortunately you probably will not feel a big gain with the cam alone, if your engine is otherwise standard. It is a combination of modifications matched together to give you the power you are chasing. It all depends on your budget and how much performance you are after versus drivability on carbed engines. If you are on a budget Jarred is right a DGV 32/36mm webber carby is a great option and a 2" sports exhaust with your new cam will wake up your engine and give you around 20hp more over stock. If your budget is far more generous you can gain a lot of power but an engine conversion would be wise if want to really see some great performance.

You dont need to get any machining work done if its the cam i am thinking of. Only a serious cam with a lot of lift will require any machining work for clearance in the head.

thanks guys. bought the cam off ebay from a guy in perth. i figured i would need to do a bit more modding for it to be worth while. like i said i'm a first time engine modder and am still learning as i go. a good learning experience for my type 3's. will look into the carbs and see what i can find, unfortunately money is an object and it will have to be done within a budget ( not sure what the budget is yet ), and without the wife finding out how much i've spent.

Perhaps when he said to machine the head he meant to get it ported or flowed to get more value from the cam. I did all this many years ago. I had the head ported and also had it decked (or skimmed) to raise the compression. I also put in a performance cam, 32/36 DGAV and extractors.

Of course the rest of the engine has to be in good condition too. In my case I rebuilt it with new pistons, bearings etc.

However it would be easier to just source a 1.8 and run it on a weber.

New intake manifolds are expensive and hard to find, although through the forum and some similar sources, you should be able to find a reasonably priced second hand one!

a DCOE and manifold just went on this forum for $350 the other day, which I think is a very good price!
