  • Whos done 4 to 5 speed?

I just want to know what linkages you replaced to get it to work.

From everything ive read all over the net, you need to replace the first three things in the pic below and you can modify fourth.

Honestly said, i think its all Bs. I changed them all, adjusted them a million times etc etc etc. -.-

I went to my local VW mechanic and he had done the 4 to 5 speed change without changing any linkages at all. Its all about moving the C-clamp a little to allow the move for 5th. But for my car its a bit different, i didnt have enough room so i had to knock that gray looking box (above pic) and had to bend it slightly. Even with the bending, i still have ALL my old linkages etc and 5th goes in pretty good.

It seems to work fine now. However this is only MY OPINION lol

Years ago i did it and all i changed was the length of one of the linkages and adjusted the bracket it sat on to a different location on the spline. To far one way and i couldnt get 5th to far the other i couldn't get reverse.

        Yeah, same here.

I did this a little while ago and just replaced the linkages with the black plastic ends in your photo.
The shifter box/gate (grey thing in photo) had to be 'modified' with an grinder to increase the side to side travel of the gear stick.

I had this trouble as well. Had to take the shifter box off a few time to keep grinding to get it right... bit of a pain in the a#$e really!

I've done this numerous times and the only thing you i did to do is cut down the small linkage so it is 80mm centre to centre of the ball joint, then enjoy setting up the selector on the splines

Yep, change the two links. Get them new in a linkage kit and do all the other bushes while you're at it.

You can add 25mm to the length of the vertical lever and 25 - 50 mm to the horizontal lever to reduce throw.

There's a lever with a ball that goes into the box in part one above, 5 speed balls are bigger than 4 speed balls. You need to change the ball lever if you change the vertical lever.

                Thanks guys.

You all say what everyone else on the net does, so why the hell do i have a totally different problem.

I have the 2 linkages which most people said are the main ones but my problem is I cant get in to 2nd or 4th without the rod poping off due to it hitting the gearbox mount. To get in to 2nd or 4th you obviously pull back which causes the first item in the pic to go forward as normal but then the rod pops off.

I also realise you have to grind something on the grey box but what exactly?

Here is a pic, i put the gearbox in to 2nd by hand and then moved the gear stick in the 2nd gear position:

that looks like a different rear mount. you should be able to use the old 4 speed mount and this should resolve the issue you have with second & fourth gears

Agree with the two linkages being replaced, I would suggest at the same time replacing the bushes and grommets on the linkages while you are at it.

Also have you changed the gear oil?

All new gear oil and bushers mate, but not all the bushers arnt instaled.

Stupid thing is the whole engine and box came out a mk2, i didnt change the engine mount but i lost the gear linkages so i got new ones and used ones off a different 4speed. I have no idea how it was working on the donor car.

have you tried swapping that link end for end? ie putting it in the other way around?

What about the L shaped lever on the box itself?

On the grey box, i think you have to grind the sides, (where it stops to get into reverse) so that you can get 1st and 2nd easier. And for 2nd and4th just try using your old linkages, as yours a little to short, also isnt the one in your pic (the one you're touching) ment to be bent?
