  • Wanting a turbo mk1...

Hey guys i need a new engine (probably more want than need) and i'm real keen to get one that will run a turbo nicely. What should my shopping cart look like? Ps- don't want to tackle too much fabing etc so maybe keep it to a 16v 1.8L..

want dubdan selling his 16v turbo set up?
as a few others have said buy one thats been done would be the best option, but you've already got a decent one from what ive seen so why not just do your basic 2e swap? doesn't cost much n will provide enough fun for the meantime at least.

The money you would end up putting into doing something like that would end up being so much more than originally intended. As others said you are definately better off buying one that already has good power.

Anything is possible, but only reason people would go for a 16v turbo is the strength of the bottom end.
The 1.8 is a strong motor, but in all honesty you'd be much better off chasing a mk4 1.8T or 16v motor as the strengthening is already there.

The 2E is just an early Mk3 spec 2.0 8v. The later codes used were ADY and AGG, but they're all pretty much the same engine. To be honest, I'm not much of a fan of the 8v engine; it's reliable but it's no fun, because it just doesn't breathe up top (even if you spend a lot of $$$ opening up the head) and Mk1s are much more fun with some revs to play with as the engine really roars through the tinny little chassis - this is the emotion you want in an old car.

Turbo Mk1s are fun and exciting, but they don't have the soul of a high revving 16v. I'm finishing a direct injection turbo one at the moment, but its more for a challenge than anything else. I also have a tricked up 16v (which I'll post up in a couple of weeks) and this is the car for driving

The trouble with a 16v is that the 9a and KR are getting old and most will be using oil if not rebuilt. You really need to find an ABF (which isn't hard), but they're more expensive. I sold a complete setup some months ago and put it in a local Mk1 2dr, which will appear on the scene soon. This whole swap only cost 1,400 on top of the engine price, including a nice manifold, new radiator etc.

Depends what you want and how much money you have.

i'll have about 1500... but not right away within the next 6 months maybe i should ask around for ones ready to slot in? i'd love a 16v with twin carbies!

                              spend $1500 on carbies.

or a blowthrough set up on your stock motor.
