  • Mk1 seat options

I find the seating position in my mk1 a little high. i'm not super tall or anything but i still find it a little uncomfortable to reach down to change gears. i also have a "sun visor" tint on my front window that i find i end up looking through some of the time dude to my head being so close to the top of the windscreen.

what are the seating options? the seat rail setup in a mk1 is unusual, with only one rail at the front. is there anything that will drop in to bring the seat down a few inches. what are the guys using for rails who have fixed back seats?

MK3's have the same tri-foot set up, i guess MK2's would too. Probably slightly different sizes. I remember a thread about it a while ago so have a search and you might find what you want.

I noticed the SEAT Cordoba uses same setup, maybe they would fit? and look newer which is handy

MK3, MK2, Audi, Crdoba, Ibiza seats can all be made to fit by swapping the MK1 tin base and legs into the later seat.

It's pretty simple to do and the back rest simply hooks back onto the MK1 base when you're don swapping the cushion over.

Trouble is though all those options will leave you sitting up higher in the cabin.

I'd probably modify a MK1 base to be a couple of inches lower and then fit that into a later seat.

I'm 6'2" and had a lot of trouble making a race seat fit into the car low enough so my helmet wasn't rubbing on the roof.

You should be able to get it much lower than stock with some mods.

Yep, just modify your existing rails mate.

I've done it to get my bucket seats in to fit and a bit lower. If i can find my camera i'd take a pic. Basically just chop and weld.. hehehe

Don't hurt me.. But when i put the bucket seats in my Mk1, i had a set i tossed out. A mate modified them and put them in a hilux, before tossing them in the bin.. So silly looking back now..

how much lower can you go with that set up? the other option is to extend the shifter up and out closer to the wheel, but the throw is already pretty big and that would just make it even more noticeable. i'm thinking i'll try a bit of both. seat down an inch shifter up an inch.

are there any short shifters available?

to reduce the shift throw? then yes

My seats are pretty low, stock ones where ok, then highest adjustment on new ones are still lower then stock, so when all way down it feels like im on the floor pan haha

Ever tried moving a car while you've got the seats out of it? It's massively strange.

I use one of these for racing, it works really well.

Hi,newbie input but if you do find a set of scirroco seats with the adjustment(mk2 rocco seats fit also)you need to swap the seats from side to side ie fit the left seat in the right position or pick the fabric and mechs off the seat and do a bit welding to get them factory).

If you pick up pretty much any old recaro seats from anything you can buy model specific bases but you sit way high with them which is good for a racing POV but bad for a good slouch for a long journey.Id chop mine down but unles you get the bases second hand its a fair chunk of outlay to be hitting with a grinder
