  • Urgent help needed!

Today running errands in the beater parked at a set of lights the engine starts loosing its idle, drops to approx 200 rpm then dies completely. I started it back up and runs fine for a second then dies again... the damn engine revs and runs perfectly only it cant hold an idle. Spent about an hour this afternoon trying to find any vacuum leaks that might be occurring but came up with nothing...

if you sit there with a bit of throttle on its be fine, but i really want to fix this before german car day on sunday.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks in advance!!

I'll take a few stabs in the dark.

    1. Fuel pump relay
    2. Vacuum leak you might've missed haha
    3. Fuel pump itself
    4. Actual mechanical gremlins, literally.

        Lots of MK 1 Scirocco's...

If it aint a MK 1 then it must be a donor car ??

        Cheers,

            i have same problem!!

will hold idle nicely 30% of time, most of time i have to heel toe into intersection and hold throttle.
Ive check all vacuum lines, ive cleaned out all the jets, resealed the carby base ect... all thats left to do is inlet gasket.

My timing is set to about 6-8 degrees and the mixture seems nice, plugs nice brown colour on idle so its not lean :S

So I've tinkered with the idle screws and mixture screws, I had it idling fine again, drove about 1km and the problem started again... Grant can you explain how I can figure out if I've got the same problem as you? I'm coming tomorrow regarless but I'd love you have this sorted, will try cleaning the carb up tonight.

              Cheers

Have your checked the rubber gasket between the manifold and Carby?

Stick a multimeter or test light on the wire that goes to the idle cut of solenoid, round thing with terminal on the LHS of the carb near the throttle butterfly, ( lhs from the driving position !!) should have power when the car is running, none when the car is turned of ( valve closes to prevent dieseling )

Goot point kid, if you have a bung carb mount rubber that can also wreack havoc to the idle as well as across the rev range mixture.

Yeah checked that rubber mount and it's fine, I've one of them bail out on me before so it was one of the first things I checked. As soon as I finish work I'm gonna swap over carbs and see if I can get results, hope to see you all there in the morning.

Thanks all for your help with this!

sounds ****y, but could be Ignition Switch!
Mine is playing up and i know if key is not in right spot it will straight away as if youve unplugged the Idle Solenoid or turned car off.
