  • front wheels won't fit over brakes...

hey guys, had a call from the guy who's building my golf atm, and he said rear wheels fit mint, but fronts are gonna clip the front brake calipers.. so i can either put spacers on them... or grind a divot out of the back of each spoke for clearence... (would only be small)

firstly... to grind or to space?? which are both going to work or is it case sensitive???

give me some advise as i want to get this show on the road ASAP and wheels are supposed to be the last thing on my mind right now!!

    cheers guys.

Which part of the brake calliper is it hitting? I had this issue on my mk1 so I took 5mm off the calliper mount which seems to protrude further than the rest. I didn’t have any issues and have seen it done before on VW's and BM's

There are different brake calipers, you could use the other type and solve the problem without grinding.

This is the exact same thing with VRs and calipers. The later give you more room to work with and more wheels to use without having to space them out

              I'd grind a calliper before a wheel.

                  That's a ditto from me.

However fixing the problem with different calipers would be the best bet.

So, depends on what section of a caliper you'd need to grind. And safer than a spacer in the eyes of the law.

grinding the wheel is gonna effect the balance and probably make your steering wheel vibrate n sh%t... grind the caliper or use a small spacer!

can you make your own spacers?? they seem pretty straight forward..

Hmmm - if there is someone who knows what they are looking at it when the car gets rego'd wont both options make it unroadworthy?

                            1 - spacers = insurance drama
2 - ground brakes = not hugely legal (last time i checked any way)

Why don't you run half worn pads for the rego and do these modifications afterwards? (I can probably give you the set out of the one in at the bodyworks if you want to pull them out yourself? I got a whole new brake upgrade for it so i'm not going to miss them.)

Kinda surprised your mechanic suggested such things to you before rego too...
I'm going to the pub... I may be some time...

Just leave the front wheels off. That would solve all your dramas.
