  • Last few wires, so close, need help.

Its almost done damn it, there is just one last loom that I cant work out.
Everything in hooked up and working appart from the ignition coil both + and - , oil sensor, temp sensor (on the side of the block) and dizzy (plug on the side of the dizzy).

There are 6 wires coming out of the loom, some i have identified as having power and some as earth, but i cant work out where they go.

    - white/purple wire
Has 7.3v all the time, goes up to 12.3v (battery) when you turn the key to start.

    - Black
Has 7.3v all the time, goes up to 12.3v (battery) when you turn the key to start, but had a few conections coming off the same wire, one was conected to the back of the old motors carby and i dunno where the other conection went.

    - Brown
Earth, tested with multimeter on continuity.

    - Red/Black
    no voltage

    - Yellow/Blue
    no voltage

    - Blue/Black
    no voltage

Ive had a search and looked for pics but no luck.

    Can anyone please help?

blue/black is oil pressure or coolant temp

yellow/blue is oil pressure or coolant temp (you cant hurt anything by trying them out - if the guages read funny or not at all swap them.

the white/purple and black wires go to the coil. I think you needent worry about the black one if it used to go to the carbie, as you have a new carb without solenoids etc yes?

you should have a green wire floating around that goes from the condensor on the dizzy to the coil. if not, just make one. as for the actual arrangement upon the coil, once again i am caught at work without my books, or my mk1. sorry mate, i failed you before too since i forgot all about you.

Cheers mate, i worked out how to read the wiring diagrams, for someone that works at Jaycar its embarasing how long it took me. Like you said it is prity handy once you know what your looking at.

I dont realy understand why the two wires have 7.3v but i guess thats how its ment to be.

Just to confirm, the reverse switch is black/grey and black?

Not sure about the carbie, if the solenoid is the yellow cap on the side of the old carby then no, it has been taken off this one. The carbie is a 32 DATRA 21/100 E9.

Ill let you know how it goes.

Ok, so tonight after work i hooked up the coil and got some spark happening. Pumped some fuel in and got a couple of pops from the motor, still not ready to start but its looking promising. Strange thing was that all of a sudden there was no spark anymore, i unpluged everything and pluged it back in and the spark came back, ive got no idea why.

I conected the coil wires as it said in the book. Puple/white on positive, red/black on negative, green from coil negative to dizzy and black from coil positive to the other point on the starter motor.

Ive hooked up the carbie in the following way, let me know if its wrong.

Wish i was there too i would get it going, Red / black on the Neg of the coil sounds wrong mate, its normally Posi. Neg of the coil get the green from the dizzy this is the make and break primary wire, red black is the ign source or starter. Older Vw the Coil + had Red/Black. and starter has red black. Old KR 16Vs had red black at the pos of the coil mate. Neg of the coil should be green. Failing that mate bugger the loom. What i would do is give the coil 12V then wire it to the pos of the coil ok, Then i would wire the neg of the dizzy. This would let you know if it runs then fix the wires later.

I thought the same thing about the red/black, but there is no voltage there what so ever and also no continuity with earth, very strange. The red/black that goes on the coil is thin and comes out of the same look as the other coil wires. The red/black for the starter is thick, ive already relayed that and hooked it up. The white/purple has voltage that does change when the key is turned. I hooked it up exactly as it said to do on the wiring diagram and i did get spark, i did try just positive 12v and negative but it basicly creates a short over the coil, e.g. coil got hot.
I do have the green from the coil negative then to the dizzy though. The one thing i dont understand is why it says to have a wire from the coil positive to the other spade terminal on the starter.
Also, i dont get why there isnt a constant 12v when the key is in IGNITION position. There is 7v all the time, key or no key, and when the key is in START the coil gets 12v, but as soon as its out of START position its back to 7v.

Small red / black from coil is tacho pulse feed and also K jet fuel pump relay signal ( that the engine is running) goes to terminal C19 on relay plate.

White/violet is from the ignition via the relay plate terminal C15, ( should have a resistance of 0.9 ohms according to my book ) which drops the available voltage to the coil to around 7 volts, this is so your points wont be welded due to recieving the full 12 V.
The black wire from the starter to the coil ( same pin as white violet) gives a full 12V when starting.

The green wire goes to the dizzy ( same terminal as the small red/black wire) as you already have.

If your getting a constant 7 Volts with the key in / out or on / off then i would think the ignition switch / wiring is dubious.

As for the carby, best of luck..

Thanks for that mate, expalins a fair bit. Ill check the ignition wiring again.
