  • Just put in the new motor.....kind of.

    Hi all,

finaly got around to fiting the 1.9L with manual box' to the mk1 ('7.
Im up to the stage where all thats left is the wiring and a bit of plumbing for the carby.
I have conected the most obvious eg. headlights, brake switch and the few wires that got to the battery. I am having trouble working out which wires go to the:
    - water temp sensor on the front of the head
    - sensor on the side of the head
    - oil presure sensor on the top of the oil filter
    - revers switch (the new box is a mk2 gti box, the old one was a mk1 auto)
    - dizzy
    - and the wires that go to the ignition coil

Also the is a second vacume hole on the dizzy that im not sure where to conect.

Does anyone know if the expansion tank under the driver side guard can be removed or should i keep it?

If anyone can help me out that would be greatly appriciated. Pics would be realy helpfull for the wiring.

    > i think the water temp sender wire is greeny/blue. There's only 1, you neednt run a wire to the one on the front of the head
    > the oil pressure sender wire is brown or black i'm pretty sure.
    > reverse switch wires - your car was auto wasnt it... hmm. I dont know without my manual on hand

might have to get back to ya about the others....

dont worry about the tube on the backside of the dizzy, leave it open or plug, makes no difference.
the tank under the guard is rubbish if you are running anything but a stock carbie setup - dead weight.

Another question is how do i identify which fuel lines are intake and return both on the car and the carby?

HAHAHAHAHAA!!! The fuel lines huh, well what i had to do is suck from each one until fuel comes out of one of them.. thats how i had to do it. Then obviously the one with no fuel is the return. hope that helps you..

Also here is a pic, this is the best pic i could find to describe it.. as you can see the vacuum line goes into the brake house thingo.

Ahah you'd be hoping to get the return line!

Good luck with this though man, hope it gets sorted.

the haynes for the diesel mk1 has all of the mk1 wiring diagrams in it. Regardless of what people say about haynes manuals, the mk1 diesel book is pretty good, has lots of info common to both petrol and diesels, and once you learn to read the VAG wiring diagrams they work well

LOL, not only that, but when you are putting in the fuel pump it doenst always go on and work straight away.

Alot of messing around to get it right, this meaning alot of petrol in your mouth ahaha
