Oh... Strut Cap Bearings? (coilover installation questions)

First up, apologies in advance.

Are the strut top bearings sweet to re-use? The inner bearing race has a slight groove worn into it, otherwise it looks fine to me.

And are the conical bits supposed to be flush with one another? (the cap on the coilovers (Raceland) and the strut top?)


I pieced the lot together to the best of my understanding, and it doesn't seem to make sense. The entire weight of each corner resting on the center of either conical section of the strut top and the coilover.

Pictures would be very helpful.

Sorry i don't t really know the answer to your question, but thought i would point you in the direction of this DIY which might help.

Its always a good idea to replace these parts when changing suspension. Its a cheap part and when is the next time you are going to have this stuff off to change it?
Even though the old stuff looks ok it still might be worn and the new suspension might not sit correctly.
It may all work out for you fine with the old strut tops, but its easier to just stick new ones in now rather than fine out you need to take everything apart again later.

strut tops can be re used. post up a pic of the engine bay, and we should be able to tell if the bearings are shot. they're a consumable after all.

it just fits on like you think. the conical bit doesn't have a matching (inverse?) conical bit that it matches too. remember that the top of the standard spring hat is also this shape. Just make sure everything goes back on in the order it came off (in relation to the strut top & that little shim/spacer/washer thing)

Oh damn, if they're that cheap... Is that from a VW dealer spares?

They're in, and I hope I've done something wrong with the rears.
I say that because there is NO travel at all. I got them to a height I thought was above 100mm on the bench before I put them under the car.
The helper spring was totally compressed before the collars were even close to the top of the threaded section of the shaft.
As if the shock isn't releasing back upwards, or even moving at all.
