there are cross flow 8V heads. mk 4's have crossflow engines (both 1.6 and 2.0 iirc) and the ABA was a crossflow 2.0L 8V from the states.

I'm not sure regarding 16V head on 8V bottom end. Either way, it would probably be easier to get a complete 16V than just a head alone.

big job putting a 16 valve head on an 8 valve bottom end, you need change the intermediate shaft, all the timing belt gears, TBH as jarred suggested its easier to go with a 16 V engine to start with.
      Lots of MK 1 Scirocco's...

If it aint a MK 1 then it must be a donor car ??

Bahn Brenner Motorsport - MkIII 2.0L ABA 16V Head Conversion Kit

This has the bits required for a 8v to 16v head swap apart from the head. Is this kit still applicable to 1.8?
