If you plan on doing any highway driving a 5-speed is a must. I have one out of a seat cordoba, its a CHB code i think and it has perfect ratios for the 1.5D. 1st and 2md are a little taller, 3rd and 4th are the same as the GC 4-speed. 5th makes cruising at 110 comfortable, 140 possible.
I'm surrounded by highway, I got myself a 4T code 5 speed its pretty tall so should do the trick just have to drop it in needs a good clean first.
This thing looks awesome, low and slow, do you have any clearance problems up steep driveways and speed humps?
I think that putting a 5 speed in might be alright, but you have to keep in mind once it's out of the powerband you will be forever shifting back down to 4th to keep the power up, and the economy might not get much better.
Would you be able to get a sound clip of it? I've not heard the mk1 diesel motor in about 10 years.....

Ive been driving stupid lowered cars for around 10 years now , I'm careful where id drive its not a daily atm. Im aware the 5 speed will be alot different dropping back to 4th doesn't bother me, i have no issues with economy didn't buy it for that reason although it is good on fuel. Plenty of sound clips on you tube already, but she will be at vw warwick this year so ill get someone to record it down the track
Had a play with the GLD yesterday decided to put a oil cooler on the beast, some mk1 enthusiasts may notice the grill has been cut out for air flow was a 3hour job to do it right
Also had a play with some aluminum end caps for the cooler, i thought the cooler looked to plain and cheap (which it is). Bent up some aluminum and polished them up they are 100% removable just there for cosmetic purposes
Those strut mounts look completely shot !!! any suspension work coming up soon ??
I got hottuning coilovers in it, the srut tops are the orginals i didn't notice how bad they where until i finished up. Not to fussed shes low and slow thats all i care about haha
Thinking of rear wheel spacers?
Cooler looks great, especially in such a ridiculously clean engine bay!
stop rubbing it in i already stated my problem with spacing them i really want to trust me may organize a photo shoot with 10mm spacers on the back
Woaaahh! i love love love love it!
Is it hard to get, and put in? I'd love to put one in myself ahaha, great work mate!!
Tthe hardest part was cutting the grill fins to go all the way across the grill and the oil cooler end caps rest was pretty easy.
Sorry for asking too much questions, but where does the oil cooler lines connect to?
I really really like the oil cooler and have made up my mind. when i get the $$ im doing it (if you dont mind me stealing your idea hehehe)
Ill get a couple more photos for you to dark atm, there is a couple different kits you can buy the kit i brought had to do alittle hunting around because all the other kits come with coolers that are just to big or there blue (g reedy kncok offs).
The install of the cooler was easy its the other stuff that made it more complex, to mount it in the same place i have you need to cut your grill out. Ive made 2 alloy brackets on the bottom of the cooler that screw to the beaver panel and i used 2 bolts on the top spaced out alittle to get it sitting nice behind the grill.
