  • Car keeps cutting out!

    Hi guys,

My 77 mk1 golf keeps cutting out. It has only started happening in the last couple of weeks and is driving me mad!
I have replaced pump, filter, dizzy cap, points, leads, plugs and its still happening.. I need help.
It usually happens after the car heats up a bit.. it will drive and then cut out and ill have to wait a bit before i can drive it again.. it also sometimes stalls when i stop.
I have replaced everything i have been told it might be and still nothing.
Any help would be greatly apprieciated.

    thanks,

    Adam.

At first I would think these things, as more general trouble shooting ideas.
have you checked the electrics? start off with basics like checking the battery and alternator and earth points.
Another thought is the carb. Did you (before the problem started) run out of fuel? It's possible you have gotten a bit of grap in the carb/fuel system. so a flush/clean might help. I'm assuming the car is in good working order, timing and tune are both good?

Given (hypothetically) it happens only when warm, is there a problem with the chock mechanism? Perhaps the choke is staying closed which is causing the car to run rich & potentially stall. That could be something to check.

Does the car struggle or do anything else before it cut's out, or does it out of nowhere just die?

Hopefully they're a few things to think about, unfortunately it's nothing specific!

Also look for a blocked fuel tank breather. I had a car with the same symptoms and the breather line had been melted closed by the exhaust.

In my case I had replaced the fuel cap for one with a working seal to stop fuel leaks. The blocked pipe had never been a problem until then.

        Thanks fellas.

I know its not really specific guess thats why im struggling! the car has been running really well.. i also changed the carbie over but the same thing was still happening.

I will check all things mentioned, but yer the revs will start dropping and then it will just cut out..
It started only when i was on the freeway but its more regular now..

ill go have a look thanks.

I had this on my previous MK1, it was the wire to the fuel cut off that was causing the problem as it has deteriorated and was making an incosistent connection to the cut off valve - while the ignition is on and the car is cranking it will run but the key off saw to it stall.

Give it a look - you never know.
