  • Mk1 Cabriolet Missing Hose

    Hi everyone,

I got underway last weekend in taking the head of my Mk1 Cabriolet for a re-build. I'm installing a techtonics 270 hydro camshaft and sport tuned valve springs. Anyway all came apart easily enough except one of the hoses from the cylinder head ripped. The rubber had gone all hard an ****ty and it just fell apart with a little tug. I have tried included photobucket photos of the hose and where it attaches to the cylinder head, check them out to see what i'm on about.

I was planning on just going to repco and getting some standard hose with the same thickness to replace it, or should i try and get a genuine replacement.. and if so where from? Any help would be great.

After getting the head rebuilt i'll obviously want to get a better exhaust. Any advice on where to get manifolds and exhausts for a 1990 cabriolet would also be great. (I'm in sydney)

I've just finished instaling a new Mohair soft top on her aswell so she's looking pretty sexy. Can't wait to get her going again, hopefully in time for the next club drive.

Look forward to your advice, cheers, Ed

      hey mate,
Hoses can be tricky to source because most of the VW parts importers dont touch them. You can get hoses from O/S (Volkswagen VW Timing Belt Cylinder Head Gasket Tensioner Jetta Golf Passat VR6 1.8t TDI Tensioner Diesel Roller Tools 028 068 038 191 Audi is pretty good for that kind of stuff) if your patient. Ring a VW dealer and ask them at the parts department (also if your patient). They are often unhelpful but if you can give them a part number (maybe its still on your hose) it will help.

Otherwise, you might be best to try a specialist breaker like GolfLoon (camden GTI), or even someone like me who has a garage full of misc golf parts. I actually think I have a hose that will do the job in my stocks from my last order from volkswaparts.com.... looks like the top radiator hose correct?

yup, could be that too. difficult to scale, nothing for a size reference. I have a bucket load of those ones in various degrees of good and bad.

Go to VW with the pipe and get them to check the part number on it for availability. I have been surprised at the dealers recently when looking for obscure pipes. You might get them to do it over the phone as well, saving a drive.

That's just a vacuum hose. A bit of fuel hose the same diameter will do the trick.

It draws air from around the injectors via a gallery in the head. You should replace the injector shrouds and o rings to prevent vacuum leaks while you're at it.

This is how the vacuum system works.

New shrouds clipped onto the base of the injector holders.

Injectors have two o rings, a little one on the tip and a bigger one up the top.

On some heads (MK3 1800) water is fed into the manifold from the same location.

Yeah looking at the diagram it's definately the vacuum hose! I'll see if volksparts have any? Great link cheers

I'll definately replace the o rings on the fuel injectors too, thanks for the advice Pete!

I'm sure I'll be posting lots more questions in the coming weeks as it all goes back together. Cylinder head should be rebuilt by next Saturday, I'll be in touch!

Also any thoughts on exhaust systems?

                Thanks everyone!

                  OOOOHHHHHHHH!

Now I see it. its in the first picture too! HAHAHA. Talk about barking up the wrong tree. Well spotted Pete, I just thought that first pic was a pic of the head, sans relevance to the hose issue.

                  well done

most people go with some extractors, 2" exhaust with a resonator and straight through rear muffler. There are variations, you could go a little bit bigger, but depends on your requires regarding noise etc. And if you're chasing every single HP you can get etc..
